This tutorial is brought to you by the Volunteer Fire Department and Sprunk... ;D
OK, so you've seen my proof-of-concept skin for Klaus, and I bet some of you are wondering how to do so in their game. It's actually easier than I originally thought, since KnowWonder, the game studio behind ASoUE, used a standard version of Unreal Engine 2.0, which here means a game engine that isn't custom and can be edited with little effort.
Let's proceed with the tutorial, shall we?
Tools needed:
UnrealEd (download the runtime and editing tools at www.4shared.com/file/35778932/2d2e6716/UE2Runtime-22261903.html?err=no-sess)
Photoshop, Gimp or any of your fave photo editor
and a copy of the Unfortunate Events PC game (this tutorial also works on the demo version, but modding the full game is over 9000 times better)
We'll be reskinning Klaus in this tutorial, so first things first - back up your data before making any changes.
Go to your ASoUE game directory (usually c:\Program Files\Activision\Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events), and then double-click on the Textures folder.

As you can see I made a backup of the SnickKidTex.utx file. This file is where the skins for the Baudelaire kids are stored; the SnickAdultTex and SnickBeastTex UTX files are, of course, for the adult and animal NPCs (Olaf, the Viper, etc.), respectively.
Now let's open them in UnrealEd; fire up the editor by clicking on Start > All Programs > UnrealEngine2 Runtime > UnrealEngine2 Editor :

We won't be dealing with maps ingame, so we'll just focus on the clothes textures. As you can see here, the textures are obviously the ones that make up Klaus ingame, and the ones we'll be dealing with are namely Klaus_Skin01 and Klaus_SKIN03.
We need to extract the textures first so that we could edit them. To extract them, right-click on the desired texture, and then click on Export to File. You'll be asked where to save it.
I'll post part 2 of this tutorial ASAP. ;D
