My new tutor is a music freak, and he wants us to do a presentation on our favourite song. I chose Scream & Run Away but the thing is, I don't know anything about it, just that it's the one of the best songs I've ever heard So I need to know when it was recorded and what instruments were used and how it was recorded. You know, just anything that might be useful.

Scream and Run Away was probably recorded in late 2000, or possibly early 2001, for the first release of the audiobook of TBB. Handler asked his friend Stephin Merritt to write it, and apparently went straight down to the bank and withdrew about $500 to pay him on commission there and then. I'm pretty sure it's accordion music, but there must be other instruments involved as well, I think?

Dante, didn't Handler ask Merritt to write the song for the first promotional tour of TBB? That’s what I thought, anyway. I think I remember hearing that Handler had been told to come up with some kind of act that would keep his audience quiet for some amount of time, and he decided to sing and play accordion, and asked Merritt to write the song for him. I was fairly certain of that, but I can't remember where I heard it, so perhaps it was unreliable source.
With all due respect.

You might be right, Lemona; the audiobook interpretation was just a guess, although since TBB was published in 1999, 2000 isn't a bad bet. Ah, in fact, I've got it: There's information right here: www.nonesuch.com/artists/the-gothic-archiesUnder "About," second paragraph.

Impressive, ivey. And, yes, Dante, the page you provided, I think, is exactly where I read it in the first place. By the way, Beth, you've made a great choice of song to do your presentation on, I think everyone would agree on that. I wish you luck. I consider "Scream and Run Away" to kind of be the anthem of Lemony Snicket.
With all due respect.
