The only time I welcome silence is when I'm trying to read. Otherwise, I prefer a little noise. Nothing too loud, though.

I do sleep with the radio on. As of lately, I've been listening almost exclusively to hard rock and heavy metal. I have a soft spot for Simon and Garfunkel, and Scarborough Fair/Canticle has got to be the most beautiful song ever - but I really don't listen to them, all that often.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!! You're getting it all wrong... I don't think the characters knew any of those bands and even if the did I doubt they would be their musical taste (though they'd perhaps like some of the one you wrote there). If you respect that THEY LIVED IN THE LATE 19th - EARLY 20th CENTURY I think They'd probably like:
Klaus: Being an intellectual boy I think his favourite of favourites would be Johann Sebastian Bach though he might like other Baroque composers such as Telemann and Vivaldi and maybe some classical too such as Mozart.
Violet: Being a the oldest responsable sister I think she would like the music her mother liked and being part of a wealthy family I assume her mother use to love Strauss' Waltzas and maybe Beethoven's and Tchaikovsky's Trios and quartest, OH and chopin's Nocturnes probably too.
Sunny: She's a baby so it's hard to tell but after growing too old for lullabies I think she would like funny classical music like mozart or maybe some good opere buffe.
Isadora: Being a poet I think she might feel very identified with the romanticism in music... I think she probably loved Tchaikovsky's and Mahler's Symphonies and suites (and things of the sort).
Duncan and Quigley: Since Isadora has more artistic sensibility, probably she influenced the music taste of her brothers and probably they listened Isadora's music together.
Fiona: Living Isolated in a submarine I think her favourite music would be the most likely the songs that her mother used to sing for her, not having really heard much music, most likely her favourit music would be some sort of folk Irish ballads.

Yes, I can definitely see the characters enjoying the type of music you've mentioned. But you've got to bear in mind that we, too, are entitled to our opinions. Aside from Very Funky Disco and freebird - who I believe have a joint universe - our ficverses are set in different time periods - for example, I've set mine in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries - those music and bands would exist. And,as writers, whether we choose to have the characters like them or not is up to us. That's one of the fun parts about writing fanfiction, you know? Like many who've posted in this thread, my writing is often influenced a lot by life experiences and personal tastes. For example, I have Esme liking Belinda Carlisle and Jerome liking the Beatles not only because that's the type of music I enjoy, but the sort I imagine they would like. It may not be a fact, but it's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. I sincerely hope I haven't offended you, or come off as cruel or critical in any way, because that was honestly not my intention at all when I wrote this. I just felt it important to point out that everyone's opinions are different, and that's okay. One of the things I love most about fanfiction is seeing the different and unique ways people portray the universe and its characters. I really do like the preferred music you chose for the characters, and how it relates so well to their personalities. You're obviously a very deep thinker, which is a necessary attribute for any writer. Well, that's about all I have to say. Oh, and before I forget, welcome to 667 Dark Avenue!

There's one musician we actually know from canon Violet likes - Yma Sumac.
I agree with a lot of faebaudelaire's choices. I don't actually think they lived in the late 19th/early 20th century; that fits the decor, and at first sight the technology as well, but if you look more closely you can see that in many ways the technology is quite up-to-date - there are fax machines, for instance. Technology is less pervasive than in our world, but not necessarily less advanced. Also there are references to writers who lived more recently than that. But I think old-fashioned musical tastes - classical, folk, and so on - are in keeping with the general feel of the series.

I got a bit carried away while writing this I think basically since we love those characters so much we can't make an objective opinion because we see ourselves through them... and yes indeed Lemony Snicket joints the victorian universe with the tecnologie of I'd say the 60s so why not imagine your own joint universe, oh thanks for welcoming OH HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT THE LS PAGE IS UNDER MAINTENANCE!!!!!!!!!!!.... he has not done this since about 5 years ago, when I read the books!!!!!! I leave to you make your own conclusion but ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: In my opinion, i picture Klaus liking: More modern (like 1960's-now) music including: The Fray, the Beatles, Cold Play, Journey, Genesis, Hedley, Led Zeppelin, the Foo Fighters, but mostly classical music like Mozart and Bethoven and Bac.
Other than that i think he'd like some folk songs or songs with a good history behind them. He also might enjoy broadway pieces from shows like the Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables not that he'd listen to them on a regular basis.

Actually, Very Funky Disco and I don't have a joint universe. Yeah, he sets the series between 1974 and 1976 - and I set mine between 1981 and 1983. We do imagine many of the characters the same way, though - such as Michael J Fox and Lea Thompson as the Quagmire triplets. As far as musical tastes goes - I'll use my other fandom, Back to the Future, as an example. Canonically, I know that Marty McFly likes Huey Lewis and The News - along with Van Halen. Of course, it probably helps that I also like both bands to a certain extent. While nothing was mentioned in the trilogy of him liking Led Zeppelin, my favourite band - there was also nothing in the trilogy that suggested that he didn't like Led Zeppelin. So, in my ficverse, I imagine that Led Zeppelin is his third favourite group - after his two canonical favourites. With Marty Jr, that one's a little tougher - but he's also more of a blank slate. That's especially the case, if you figure that he'd be a more assertive person in the final timeline. While it may be a bit common for people of his generation to prefer rap or the latest teen pop sensations, I also figure that it's certainly not true of all of them. I figure that, with Marty being his father, he'd grow to have an appreciation for rock music. I imagine that he would like some of the newer rock bands, along with some of the classics. So, yeah, I do include some of my interest - along with considering what they like in canon.

faebaudelaire: Hey, no worries. I know what you mean about getting attached to characters...I am very attached to Esme and Jerome, so much that I used to feel sad if someone pointed out that they didn't survive the fire. XD I agree with you as well about the ASoUE universe being a combination of the Victorian era and technology. violetbaudelaire51: Wow, Klaus certainly has a variety of musical tastes, doesn't he? It's funny that he's a closet Eminem fan. ;D @very Funky Disco: Yeah, I think it's the fact that both you and freebird imagine the Quagmire boys resembling Michael J. Fox that made me assume you shared a ficverse. I, too, can picture Marty being a fan of Led Zeppelin. His canonical favorites are of heavier rock, right? From what I've listened to of Led Zeppelin, they seem to be a bit softer, but then again people tend to have all sorts of different tastes. For example, I enjoy the music of both Evanescence and OneRepublic. I agree that when it comes to characters whose roles are more minor, such as Marty Jr., it's sometimes more of a challenge to write them. But if you're a creative person, as I know you very much are, then the development process isn't as difficult as it would be otherwise.

@emma "Emmz" Squalor: yeah...i posted this a while ago and i have no idea what i was thinking with the Eminem thing. ;D I definitely don't think that anymore but i always think of Klaus whenever i hear a song by The Fray. And as you can tell i like a lot of music so the characters like a variety of music too lol. though now that i think about it, i would definitely delete a few of those bands like The Who

I don't have a fanfic but I imagine the musical tastes to be like this: Klaus- He is a total hipster when it comes to music, only listen to artists no-one has heard of before. Violet- Unlike her brother, she likes popular artists, but she is not a fan of pop. She likes very alternative music. Esmé- She enjoys French music- it is very in. She also enjoys listening to jazz music while lounging by the pool. Carmelita- Likes pop a lot. Count Olaf- He is a fan of hardcore rock, the kind of rock in which people scream. Isadora- She likes Classical music and sometimes, when she is reading a poem, she likes to make up a melody and turn it into a song. Jerome- He listens to all types of music because he doesn't like to argue.

violetbaudelaire51: Well, even if you have changed your mind about Klaus and Eminem, I still like it. It's unexpected, which is what makes it so funny. ^^ I haven't heard much music by the Fray, but I do adore How to Save a Life. The melody itself is just beautiful...it makes me want to cry! :') It's cool that you transfer your musical tastes onto your favorite characters. I do the same thing, along with bits and pieces of my interests and personality. @fredy: I agree with all of your music choices for these characters. Especially Esme, who I imagine might be an Emilie Simon fan? I also like the idea of her listening to jazz by the pool. Would you mind if I incorporated these into a fic sometime? I'd be sure to give you credit. Oh, and your idea for Isadora writing a song based on a poem she likes is very creative.

Violet-likes all kinds of music. She doesn't have a favorite or an unfavorite genres. Her favorite singers are Yma Sumac(like in canon) and Avril Lavigne.
Esme-likes French music
Count Olaf-likes his own songs.
Kit Snicket-likes Russian romances. This is probably because Kit is my favorite woman in ASoUE and she shares my interests.
Mr.Poe-likes jazz
Isadora-she is a fan of rock. Her favorite band is Tokio Hotel. Her favorite song is the Love Is Dead.
Hugo, Colette and Kevin-they like songs by themselves. Hugo, Colette and Kevin write songs in my ficverse.
