"You poor thing!" exclaimed Esmé, in response to Fiona's description concerning her elder brother. "How unfortunate for you - I'm so sorry. I never had any siblings, but I was often bullied by other children prior to entering the V.F.D. Training School, and so I understand how it can be."
"By the way," Jerome asked, "what year is it where you all come from? It's 2001 in the universe where Esmé and I reside."

Fiona replied to Esme, "Well, I guess everybody is bullied some point in their lives. salsa happens."
She then turned to Jerome and said, " Wow, 2001? I'm from 2010. It's now December where I'm from, so it's almost 2011."

"Wow! I guess you guys really are from the future!" exclaimed Violet. "Quigs and I are here from 1985." Then, turning to Fiona, she added, "I'm sorry to hear about your brother still being a jerk. You really should try to get out, as soon as you can."

Fiona replied, "Thanks, Violet. I have to wait until after finals are over, which won't be until May, to have a face-to-face with my brother. Because, after finals, I'm going back to America for the summer. The summers in Beirut are intense, so I'll be back in San Francisco for the summer. I hope to make ammends with him. The root of the situation between me and my brother is his monkey. I hope he breaks up with her by the time I get back from the Middle East."

"It's funny," Esmé mused, "how I always thought time travel only existed in films and in books. Not that I mind being proven wrong, of course - it just amazes me. And I'm sorry to hear about your brother's girlfriend, Fiona. Though I must say I can relate, as I don't get along with Jerome's father at all."
"It's nearly winter in our world," Jerome said. "And you're from San Francisco, too, Fiona? That's where Esmé and I reside."
"Jerome grew up in the city," Esmé added, "while I was born in Paltryville. I lived there until I was thirteen, when I was adopted by Olaf. After that we moved to the city, albeit a much poorer section than Jerome's family. My own parents couldn't afford to keep me, especially after my mother became very sick with tuberculosis, and so most of the money we had went to her hospital bills. We'd been acquainted with Olaf for about three years, and he offered to take me into his custody."

Suddenly, Violet felt sympathetic towards Esme - even though he wasn't sure if the same was true of the Esme in her world.
"Dr. Emmett Brown is working on creating a time machine," Quigley started to say. "I don't know if you guys know him or heard of him - but he is a scientist who grew up in Hill Valley, California. Anyway, he is working on a time machine that would allow for astral time travel. He's uncertain of whether or not physical time travel would be possible - and he also says, if it was, it would be a little dangerous to the space time continuum."
"Sometimes, I wish I could go back in time," Violet added, sighing, "and prevent the fire that destroyed our mansion and killed our parents. On the other hand, though - our experiences made us who we are."
"We were thinking of travelling to 1977, though," added Quigley, "and maybe seeing what Count Olaf and his troupe were doing, back then. Of course, being intangible, we would not be able to do anything."

"In the films I've seen and books I've read dealing with time travel," Jerome began, "they say that the slightest change can alter the future in ways we can't even begin to imagine. I'd be lying if I said I'd be just a little bit uncomfortable about traveling through time. However," he added quickly, not wanting Violet or Quigley to fall under the impression that the billionaire was chastising them for any decision the young adults planned to make, "if you have a lot of experience in that field, or you're with someone who's experienced, I don't see any reason not to take such a journey."
"I was born in December of 1969," Esmé explained to Violet and Quigley, "which would make me about seven years old in 1977. I suppose if I could change anything about my past, it would be to prevent the deaths of my parents. My mother's tuberculosis ultimately claimed her life, and my father died of a combination of alcoholism and grief three years later." The memories of losing her parents summoned tears to the former villainess's eyes, and she leaned her head against her husband's shoulder for comfort.
Jerome responded immediately by drawing his arm around Esmé, and then placing a comforting, protective hand over her belly.

"You were born in 1969, Esme?" Violet gasped, with surprise. "That's the year Klaus was born. I mean, he was born in February of that year."
"It does seem odd," Quigley agreed. "At any rate, I guess it doesn't really matter - seeing as it's a different world." Then, turning to Esme, he added, "I'm so sorry about what happened. It does hurt to lose your parents. The Baudelaires and I are able to relate."
Emily turned towards Esme, and began to stroke her arm.

(Aww, Emily is so sweet. I think she and Emma would be good friends, if they ever met. "Thank you all," Esmé said, "for your kindness. You have no idea what it means to have people who understand." She smiled at the two children she had once - along with her ex-boyfriend - pursued, in an attempt to gain access to their fortunes. Next, she smiled down at Emily, who was gazing up at the Esmé with such genuine kindness and concern that it brought tears to the former villainess' eyes. Though they had only just met, Esmé hoped her own child - who she had recently found out was to be a girl - would be every bit as sweet and loving as Emily so obviously was. "Unfortunately," Jerome said, his hand rubbing up and down his wife's back comfortingly, "not everyone back in our world is as accepting and understanding as you all. That dreadful Geraldine Julienne recently published an article in The Daily Punctilio about Esmé's child being Olaf's. Now, we can't even leave our house most of the time without becoming the targets of the paparazzi, as well as other people's criticisms." Esmé began to cry softly, feeling the shame of the past and present wash over her like an unwanted rainstorm. Jerome pulled her closer, while Emily reached up to clutch her hand.

"That is awful!" gasped Violet. "That Geraldine Julienne is a real troublemaker, isn't she?"
"I wish there was some way we could help," added Quigley, as tears stung his own eyes.

"Geraldine was my best friend during our years together at the V.F.D. Training School," Esmé explained sadly. "I don't understand why she'd betray me like this."
"I suppose things back home are bound to calm down eventually," Jerome added, and nuzzled his wife's tear-stained cheek affectionately. "After all, how long can people gossip about the same subject before they tire of it? I just wish I knew how much time we have left before that happens."
"You've all been a great comfort to us, though," Esmé went on. "You're very kind, and I'm so sorry for all the awful things I put you through in the past. I truly do regret it." Although she wasn't the same Esmé as the one from the world of the Baudelaires and the Quagmires - and possibly from Fiona's, though she wasn't entirely sure - Esmé felt it necessary to make her apologies while she had the chance. "If only we'd met at different times, then we could have been friends long before now."

"I forgive you," Violet replied, a little nervously. It wasn't that she didn't forgive Esme, but it wasn't really the Esme of her world. "I can tell that you are sincere, and I do believe in forgiveness."
"Same here," Quigley replied, flashing a lopsided smile. Violet glanced at her boyfriend, and began to run her finger along the dimple in his left cheek.
"I really love this song!" gushed Emily, as I've Had Too Much to Dream Last Night by the Electric Prunes began to play. She began dancing around the room.

"Wow," said Jerome, who was grateful for the little girl's presence. Things had gotten a little melancholy, if he was honest, and he was pleased to see that not everyone had been affected. "Just look at her go! Do you take dance lessons, Emily?"
"She's very energetic, isn't she?" Esmé commented. "I wonder if our little one will be the type who loves to run and jump and dance." As she said this last part, she gazed lovingly into her husband's emerald eyes. She hoped he knew that the only father she wanted for her baby was him, the man whose love had been a constant presence in her life from the moment they'd met.

"Yeah, she is quite the energetic type," Violet replied, with affection.
"And she's got great taste in music," Quigley added. "Of course, Beatrice and Sunny also love listening to rock music. We never really felt that it was necessary to children to listen to... to kids' music. It's great to introduce children to good music at an early age."

"I always hated when adults forced me to listen to children's music," Esmé said. "I remember being in kindergarten, and my teacher had my class sit around in a circle on the floor, while she asked each of us our favorite song. When she got to me, I told her my favorite song was Dancing Queen by Abba." Esmé smiled to herself, remembering the look of shock on her teacher's face. "She went on to ask me if I had any other favorite songs - in other words, songs she thought were appropriate for someone my age. When I shrugged and told her no, I didn't, she rolled her eyes at me and said we'd 'discuss this later'. You see, even at just six years old, I could still see how ridiculous my teacher was being. Later that afternoon, when my father came to pick me up from school, I told him all about what had happened. He laughed when I told him the things my teacher had said, and then explained that I shouldn't hide who I am for the sake of others. To be honest, I suppose my father's words of wisdom are part of what inspired me to want to dress in such bizarre outfits later on in my life."
