It's okay for people to post here, right? Anyway, I just thought I'd drop a line and say that this is yet another installment of YASoUE I'm very interested in seeing. It's going to be fascinating to read something from Esme's point of view, since we only really know her from the outside, with little to know idea of what's going on inside her head. Like TOO, this definitely gives me and your other fellow readers something to look forward to.

Didn't notice this earlier due to confusion with Esme's Diary Vol. 2 by Violet Marie, but now I see it. It's pretty obvious how this ties into the coming narrative, and I'm sure it can only excite. How are you planning on scheduling it, if you can tell us yet? Updating them alternately? (If it's a U.A.-style series of documents, it might be hard to distinguish between teasers and actual content, it occurs.)

@emmz: Thanks Emmz! ^^ of course it's okay for people to post here! ^^ I'm really excited about writing as it is my first time writing a strictly document style fic, specially when it comes to my favorite character, Esmé Squalor. I hope everyone will enjoy the past I designed for Esmé.
@dante: Yeah, there can be a little confusion given the title likeness, but I had this book planned from the start. Yes, TOO and TED are really about Esmé and how she came to be who she is. This fic is different, as it will be published as the Baudelaires make discoveries in-story, so no teasers. Unlike the normal books in YASoUE it might have more than 13 chapters, but this fic is not linear, so expect some surprises. ^^

Oo, exciting. (I had thought that the promised supplementary volume would be the Fulfilment File. I guess that will come later.)

Sounds fascinating, Tiago; I'll just have to hope the Baudelaires make discoveries rather faster than they usually do.

Chapter One
The beginning Ophelia, October 31st, 19XX
Dear Diary,
Today was my birthday, and it was Halloween. My dad took both me and Beatrice trick or treating. Her mom made her a beautiful fairy costume. My mom was too sick to make mine, so my dad bought me a witch costume. It was very cold, and the sun was blocked out by the clouds. People didn't give me as much candy as they did to Beatrice. I noticed their smiles when they saw her, which went away as they saw me. Why are all of them like this? What did I do?
Esmé I believe Esmé was seven years old when she wrote this. Her mother, Francesca, was being treated for mental illness in a town where mental illness is reason for completely ostracizing of a person. Ophelians do not talk of those sent to Addams Asylum, not out in the open. Growing up as a bastard child in a town of strict family values must have was not very good. Ophelia, November 2nd, 19XX
Dear Diary,
Daddy took me to visit mommy in the hospital. She was sad, and she didn't say a word.
Esmé This marks the beginning of Francesca's descent into the downward spiral that swallowed her in what was one of the darkest days of Ophelia. Ophelia, November 23rd, 19XX
Dear Diary
Today my dad arrived with a worried expression. I meant to hug him, but Estelle, always Estelle, told me to go to bed. I went to bed, but I couldn't sleep. I heard them fighting again, and Beatrice did too. Estelle had my dad sleep in the couch. I went out of my room, and I went to the living room, my dad was crying. I tried to leave, but I hit the armory when I turned. My dad saw me. He called me and said that my mom had run away from Addams Asylum and that uncle Augustus was trying to find her. I don't think he will, this time. She has escaped before. I'm sad. My dad hugged me and told me it would be alright. My dad never hugged me in front of Estelle, so it was good that she wasn't there. It was also good that Beatrice wasn't there either. It was just me and dad.
'My little Esmé, how you've grown.' Dad said, hugging me and carressing my hair. I loved my dad's cologne. Whenever he put it on, he always became more beautiful. I love my dad. He told me to go to bed and promised to make cherry pancakes, my favorite kind of pancakes.
- Esmé Francesca, or 'Franny' to her friends and family ran away, like she had many times before. It was later discovered that her breakout was enabled by someone in the Asylum, though no proof existed.

I'm glad to see this starting out, and even these few glimpses start to give us an idea of how a young child could grow up to be the Esmé we know and... hate, love? But who's taking the notes? (A question which applies to the U.A. as well, really.)

This is a great insight to Esmé's childhood, and it's easy to see how these events shape her adult life. The complex V.F.D. relationships seem especially prominent in this fic.
Now, who could have helped Francesca break out of the asylum? Perhaps... but the timeline probably doesn't work out that way.

I didn't expect this to start up until later on, so what a nice surprise it was to log on and find it waiting! You do a really amazing job of not only writing from Esme's point of view, but from the point of view of a child. Her innocence is both believable and an interesting contrast to her villainous status later on in the canon and YASoUE. It's such a heartbreaking detail to learn she was treated so poorly by those outside her family, merely because of how she was born and because of what her mother was dealing with. You did a lovely job describing the moment between Esme and her father in the living room. I liked especially the part about his cologne. Esme likes pancakes. ;D Hmm...is it me, or do pancakes seem to be a favorite dish of ASoUE characters in fanfic? And you adopted 'Augustus' as Dr. Finch's first name! I'm so happy you liked it enough to make it official. ^^

Oo - interesting. Yes, this explains a lot about E. And I, too wonder who is taking the notes.

Yes, one would certainly think that, wouldn't one? By the way, there seem to be only a handful of stories floating around that relate to Esme as a child. So thanks for adding to that pile. ^^
