Are you referring to the line that reads: "You should be very proud of yourself ... if you weren't a freak, Chabo, you could grow up to be an excellent chef." Or: At first I thought it was some freaky wolf recipe, but it's actually quite tasty."? These are the closest remarks I could find to the one you cited, and you'll notice they're actually rather friendly in context. . No, I mean another situation. TSS, chapter 6: " Have you already made breakfast?" "Almost," Sunny answered " This baby can't be useful," Hugo announced. " She is a real carnival freak!"Hugo behaved very aggressive and rude.

That line seems to be a product of your translation, colette. Here's how that exchange was expressed in the original English:
"Are you done making breakfast?" "Almost," Sunny replied. "That infant never makes any sense," Hugo said. "No wonder she fooled us into thinking she was a carnival freak." (p116)

Yes, I agree with Sherry Ann, although I think I can remember somenthing like that phrase, but not said by Hugo... Maybe the man with hooks instead of hands said it, I don't know. I can't remember Hugo saying something bad to them, as a matter of fact, he wasn't happy when Kevin said that they were really freaky (maybe not in these words, if I could, I would look for the phrase but I don't own the books, I got them in my school's library and already returned it), when they first met.
Edit- Wow, you posted almost at the same time I did! Colette I said that Hugo was polite at least on TCC. I don't know if he is agressive in TSS because I haven't read much of it yet

@dante, sorry. But it is not my fault! And can't remember Fernald saying anything how freakish Baudelaires! Fernald always was the friendliest Count Olaf's associate! He was useful in TEE! He helped Baudelaires to find Quagmires!

Nonetheless, Fernald was pretty liberal with the tagliatelle grande whip in TCC, even though it must have been quite difficult for him to even hold it.
