I initially read this as "Mr. R.," and while it still could be that character, it would be quite unexpected to see him again. I Googled it. Very nice.

Held hostage? That seems very disturbing. Clearly, as in ASOUE, their meeting with comrades doesn't meant that they are safe yet.
And am I right in thinking that M.R is the person better known as E.S.?

Dark Avenue is in Japan, then? I guess the identity of M.R. would depend on the identity of R.Q. Are we meant to know the identity of R.Q.? The initials seem familiar.
And sekai wa koko ni shizuka desu, indeed.

Dark Avenue is not in Japan. Think of Yoshiwara as Chinatown. An asian district.
About R.Q., it's actually a codename, and an anagram. ^^

In retrospect, I thought certain initials were familiar, and I went looking back through previous preview material to find them. Browsing the promotional material for The Shivery Shrine may prove instructive. In fact, given that retrospect, an awful lot of previous promotional material is in fact between the same two people.

A very beautiful photograph of Yoshiwara you've got there, Tiago - and one made all the more appealing by the view of the Dark Avenue buildings. Sekai wa koko ni shizuka desu. I Googled it. Very nice. Yes, so did I. Needless to say, the answer came as a most amusing surprise. Still, it makes me wish I knew Japanese. ^^ And great thinking, Dante, regarding the teasers for The Shivery Shrine; I'll have to go back and browse through the others, to see if I can make any connections.

Aha! Given that helpful hint, I've worked out both anagrams. Now to see where else M.R. and R.Q. are mentioned ...

Behind the photograph, written in purple calligraphy: Yoshiwara by night. - - - - - Dear M.R., Please make sure the Baudelaires are properly dressed in the current dresscode, or, as our cousin's wife said, what is in at the moment. If they dress any other way they might attract unwanted atention. Yours truly, R.Q. - - - - - A business card: A description: The House of In specializes in following the trends, and because of their recent success with the latest in trend, they set up a shop in Yoshiwara, to attend to the expensive tastes of the most powerful clan in Yoshiwara, the Yazawa clan, currently established in the House of Red Leaves, which is an inn, a restaurant, and other businesses. I have no idea why it displays the 667 Dark Avenue address, when the House of In has a shop at 713 Dark Avenue. An intercepted letter: Dear R, The Higurashi are on their way to you straight out of Tokyo Harbor. The elder girl put up quite a fight, and so did the middle child. The Higurashi mansion has been toppled by a tsunami and and an earthquake, and their parents, killed. The Higurashi fortune is your for the taking. Wishing you are well, Tanaka Shin A Description:
This letter was intercepted by a volunteer, and this volunteer made contact with the Higurashi orphans, but it's not my knowledge if these are the same Higurashi orphans that were in the House of Red Leaves. I must investigate further.R.Q. - - - - - Umi wa shizukanai.

A parallel set of orphans? Their lives sound rather exciting and frightening.

I wonder if the Higurashi orphans will be crossing paths with our heroes at some point? And how beautiful Yoshiwara appears at night! It makes me think of the film Lost in Translation, which makes me think of Scarlett Johanson, who reminds me of Elizabeth Anwhistle. ^^ Hmm, yes...I, too, am curious to know the reason behind this strange occurrence. Though something tells me it's no typo... BTW, Tiago, do you speak Japanese, or do you use an online language translator for your taglines? I was wondering and just thought I'd ask.

@emmz: No I don't speak japanese. I know only a few words and sentences, and music lyrics - I know the lyrics, but not the meaning - but I'm gonna try to get into a japanese course.

How unfortunate for the Higurashis! And the writer of the letter--well, it puts R in a rather treacherous light, doesn't it? Hmm, Google doesn't seem to be working this time. Which gives me an excuse to use that Japanese-English dictionary I've had for years!

Yeah, I only know a couple of words myself (just one of the benefits of watching subtitled anime!). I had a friend who graduated high school the year before they started offering Japanese as a language course. I hope you're able to get into one, though I see no reason why you'd have any difficulties. Hmm, Google doesn't seem to be working this time. Which gives me an excuse to use that Japanese-English dictionary I've had for years! Yeah, it was doing that for me, too. The only helpful result to come back was the English translation to a film title. I do know what "umi" means, so I assume the name of the film and Tiago's tagline are one in the same. And it's a good thing you picked up that Japanese-English dictionary when you did! Perhaps it was a sign? Or was it for a class?

I, too, was very struck both by the new set of orphans, and by the rather suspicious way R features in this story. (Perhaps she is not the real R? L in TUA wonders if someone is impersonating her.)
