Linda Cooldeen's post about 667 Dark Avenue's tenth birthday got me thinking... Daniel Handler's birthday is not too far away. I see that you always send him something special for his birthday. We should start thinking about what we will send to him this year, so we can have the time to do this with no rush. I don't want to be that annoying newcomer who thinks he owns the place, but I felt this was important. Any ideas?
P.S.: I'm not sure I'm posting this in the right section, I'm sorry if I'm wrong.

We usually start gathering ideas around the beginning of February (in Weary Writer, but this is fine for now). Last year the suggestion was that since this will be Handler's 42nd birthday, there will be some reference to Douglas Adams. And I know someone had an idea they were saving for 2012, so we'll see what comes of that, too.

It was a good idea to bring this up, F.D., and this is a fine place to do so. Once the New Year hits, there's really no time too early, although we managed pretty well in only about a fortnight last year. This gives us a bit more time to come up with some ideas. I think something Adamsy and 42-associated wouldn't be a bad idea - 42 rather dour meanings of life, perhaps - but I'd certainly be interested in hearing all other ideas. And if we get really desperate then we can just use the old fallback option of putting together a small card with a lot of signatures.
(I actually have an idea that I think is good, but which I keep on forgetting to to prepare early enough, as it'd need a practice run. I'll try and get that going this summer - I don't awnt to risk us not having time this year, especially when we already have a readily-apparent gimmick.)

Do you mind sharing the idea, Dante? Not to be rude or anything, I'm just interested to know. And also, how would we put a card together with signatures since we all live around the world?

(A collaborative fanfic, with fanart chapter pictures, and input from non-writing-or-drawing users through maybe polls on plot direction or something? It would definitely need a practice run, and this is probably a busy time of year for a lot of people, so I don't want to just spring this out now. I really should get that practice run done this summer, though. I made enquiries with a few potential writers literally years ago and then never got around to it.)

Or maybe even by just writing it in MS-Paint or something? I wasn't here the last time they did a signature card though so I'm not sure.

Why don't we give it a try? We have lots of time, writers and fanartists here.

The idea of one big fanfiction sounds great! I'd be happy to contribute. Hermes, I see, thank-you for answering.

I'm flattered that people like my idea, but I still think it'd be safest to leave that for another time. In any case, let's see what other ideas people have first. I still think 42s and meanings of life are a good direction to go in, and it's not like we'll get another chance to use it.

I would be happy to contribute to the fanfic.
And 42 - yes, definitely. (A friend of mine, by the way, once asked his university's main computer 'What is the meaning of life?'. It replied 'Spaces are not allowed' - which is very insighful, I think.)

Since he's turning 42, I think we should do something HttG and Douglas Adams-related, at least in part, for his birthday. It would be hilarious and somewhat ironic, both of which are very Snickety things.

I don't what can be done about that whole "42- meaning of life" subject...

I also think the fanfic/art collaboration is inspiring, but I share the worry about time constraints. As an alternative, we could take what Snicket might consider the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, (subtly inserting 42 into individual contributions as well as the final project as a whole (42 total entries, for example)) and combine that with the Hitchhiker setting. I can't find it now, but I once read a concrete poem in the shape of an infinity symbol, the words looping back on themselves to form a never-ending sentence. A variation of that could be to take a literary/visual approach to the science world - stars, matter, cosmos, etc. - as that provides a great deal of material, and encourages creativity.
It's a rather foggy suggestion, I know, but if it arouses interest I can elaborate when more examples come to mind.
