Would the short stories involve ASOUE, though?

I think that would probably be up to the individual writer and would depend on the subject. My own envisioning is that they could, but wouldn't have to.

Just so we're all clear:
What we're planning on doing is making a joke about 42 being the meaning of life, by listing 42 bad things, each with its individual, 42 word, short story. Right?

You can definitely count me in for the 42 word, short story idea. It'll be a challenge for me, as I tend to get carried away when it comes to story length, but I think I can manage. I am also interested in contributing to the collaborative fanfiction, whenever you decide to get that going, Dante. @tiago: Good luck with your HGttG/ASoUE crossover! I remember us discussing that a while back, and it sounded awesome, even though I haven't read HGttG.

Essentially, yes. We'd have some kind of framing letter, like last year, probably - to introduce the project. Then a big image collage of the forty-two bad things in the shape of the number 42. Then forty-two stories of forty-two words each about one of the bad things. Another idea that strikes me now is having each story, or "story," increase in number, so they go from being one word long for the first to forty-two words, but that'd be quite hard to co-ordinate between us.

Hmm, I like that idea, but it will be a challenge.
I'd be very happy to contribute to the stories.

Hmm, I like that idea, but it will be a challenge. Agreed, but a good challenge nonetheless. Perhaps we can have a sign-up thread, in which members pick what number they want to do. That should help keep things organized.

That sounds like a good idea, Emma.

Thank you, Brunch. ^^ I know we've always done the same during the 667 Darkies Awards, when enlisting makers for the banners, so I thought the idea would come in useful here, too.

I think the collage and opening letter along with the 42 stories are all excellent ideas. I'd like to hear more about the increasing-by-word entries, though, since I'm not sure I know exactly what's implied. Would they be individual stories, or follow a continuous "plot"? If the latter, would the entries be spontaneous or planned? What would the focus of the subject matter be?

Hm, the increasing-by-word stories sounds interesting.
But, if we're each going to submit a 42-word short story, it'd be fun to stick in a secret 43rd story by stringing together all the 42nd words of the 42 stories - perhaps a foreshadow of what we might send for Daniel Handler's 43rd birthday?

That would probably require too much co-ordination. Probably so would the otherwise very nice idea to slip a secret message in across the stories, although the forty-second story could have a nod in the direction of the future. Linda has the gist of what I was thinking of for the stories with very short word counts. Was it Ernest Hemingway who said his greatest story was only six words long? "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." It's a creative exercise.

I really like that idea ;D So what would the stories be about? I'm assuming, "bad" things? If we are going to do the increasing words stories, "Ouch" does seem like a good idea, as Linda Cooldeen said.
