Why We Broke Up has a cover! I don't have time to edit out Amazon's white bars, sorry.

Is that .... a tea-cup? Well, it's not a sugar bowl, but it seems odd that tea-sets exercise such an influence over his life.

I find tea a rather effective device for placing the mood for Snicket's stories--it brings a traditional setting to mind while not allowing us to forget danger is still near. Also, the words spilling out of the cup is a neat effect.

And of course, if the tea cup is flying, it would seem likely that it's about to break up, too. Perhaps that'll be important to the plot. ...Well, I'm not sure why it'd be on the cover otherwise. Also: Considering that the book is on sites like Amazon and has a cover, it would seem to be finished, so... why is it not out for another seven months?

I think it's an awesome cover. It's a damn shame Mr. Snicket's other works are not being published here in Brazil.

And of course, if the tea cup is flying, it would seem likely that it's about to break up, too. Oh! Nice observation. Does a finished cover imply a finished book? In any case, it's common practice to wait some time after a book has been completed to release it (although how far that time period stretches I couldn't say).

Does a finished cover imply a finished book? In any case, it's common practice to wait some time after a book has been completed to release it (although how far that time period stretches I couldn't say). From what I can tell, most books are published about six months after being written, and that's before all the illustrations are done. There are exceptions, but when the cover art is on the web, it's generally a sign that the book is all done bar the actual printing, especially since I've never seen cover art precede a release date, although I think those are always set a while in adavnce in accordance with publication schedules and how well the writing's going. I just checked and the same thing happened with 13 Words - the cover went up seven months before the book was published. Could partly be a product of the author-illustrator collaboration, though - Handler and Kalman are working directly together on this, whereas Helquist could only illustrate ASoUE after each volume had been finished (and in fact this caused problems with TEE, because Handler was late finishing it and the publishers were worried that Helquist wouldn't have time to do the illustrations). Consider that The Composer is Dead only had a five-month gap between cover art and publication, for instance. ASoUE's cover art was generally pretty late, but that's probably partly publicity - they needed to keep people excited over a period of months, so information would be reduced to a trickle - they'd have put it out earlier if we had to wait years between books (or if nobody was particularly interested), but with only a year between books then they can make a bit of an event out of every piece of information they can release. That's part of why it's a bit of a drag for WWBU's cover art to be out this early - there's basically nothing more they can tell us about the book between now and when it comes out. It was originally meant to be out in 2011 anyway. It's partly frustration, of course, that makes me make this remark. This is basically a dry year for Snicket/Handler; the only thing he has coming out is an introduction to The Chronicles of Harris Burdick. That's coming out in late October, by the way. It's an easy one to forget about.

Are you even allowed to sell Advanced Reader copies? I thought they were only for magazines and newspapers and such to write reviews.

Ebay is full of ARCs. After a little more searching, I may wait until a cheaper copy comes up. There were several that didn't sell in the completed auctions that might come back for sale again.

This just proves my point, that the book is basically finished. Its 2012 publication date has to be to do with the publisher's projected sales line-up rather than being timed with its actual completion.
