The Careers. I call them that because they are very intelligent and will have great success in the work force.
Amazing chapter, Willis.
"Believing in something makes it happen. If you can achieve anything, then you can achieve your dreams and they can happen." - Connor Ratliff
"Some days, you feel like the world is against you. And everyone around you seems so mean and ugly. There are times I just burn with hate. In those times... I am ugly, too. I don't want to hate. I want to be kind, and waken the kindness in others." - Amy Jellicoe
I wake up next to BSam and Sixteen, both looking as handsome as usual. I am so happy that I get to be with both of them, but at the same time, I know I must choose one of them. They are fighting all the time, although they think I can’t hear it. But I can. Every day is stressful and dangerous. BSam wakes up and says “Hey Shelly, let me go find something for your breakfast before Stinkteen wakes up.” He goes into the forest. As soon as he leaves, Sixteen opens his eyes. “Hey Shelly, I was just pretending to sleep so that ButtSam would feel obligated to get us something to eat. Let’s cuddle.” I cuddle in Sixteen’s powerful embrace for a while and it is magical. I hear a rustle in the woods and sit up. In the distance I hear Dante, Sherry Ann and Germes, or as I like to call them, The Careers. I call them that because they are very intelligent and will have great success in the work force. Sixteen and I fear them finding us, so we hide inside the trunk of a tree, clutching each other in fear that this will be our last breath.
We breathe another breath. Then another breath. We figure out that our last breath hasn't happened and probably won’t so we probably shouldn't’ be so concerned with our breathing. The careers walk up to our tree, and then stop. I hold my breath. I am obsessed with talking about breathing, but more importantly I do this because I don’t want the careers to hear us. Dante looks around and sees our supplies. He picks up some grass and tosses it, watching where it falls methodically. “BSam, Shelly and Sixteen have been here. BSam is out getting some food for them, while the other two are hiding in a tree. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough grass to tell me specifically which tree. Otherwise we could find them and kill them. Let’s split up and search for them.” Dante walks to the left, Sherry Ann to the right, and Germes stays in our area, looking at our tree. I start breathing again, because I was holding my breath this whole time. Germes hears me breath, and approaches our tree. I breathe fearfully, and close my eyes. I hear a thump, and I open my eyes. BSam has put an axe into the back of Germes’ head, and he falls to the ground. He taps on the ground, which confuses me. Sixteen says “He’s sending a Morse code message to his teammates before he dies. We have to get out of here.” The three of us run, grabbing what little gear we can before Dante and Sherry Ann return.
We run for a mile or so until we are sure they aren’t following us anymore. “BSam, that was so brave you of you,” I tell him. BSam blushes and says “Aww, shucks.” I look at Sixteen and say “And you were so smart to have us hide in that tree. We might be dead without you.” Sixteen looks at the ground embarrassedly and says “Gee whiz.” We all smile at each other. BSam and Sixteen look at each other, then get serious. “Shelly, we can’t keep playing these games. You need to choose one of us,” says Sixteen. BSam nods in agreement. I open my mouth in shock. I know that they both have longed for me just as I have longed for both of them. But I can’t force myself to choose. “No,” I say defiantly and start running away. I accidentally trip over a wire, which releases a swinging sword that impales me. BSam and Sixteen both run to my side. Cybermystery jumps up from behind a bush and yells “Yay, my trap works” before cowardly running away. With my actual last breath, I say “I love you both.” Then I die. I’m not sure how to do first person narration after dying so bye.
BSam and Sixteen looked at each other. They had long been rivals. They had both made plans to try and kill the other without Shelly knowing. But that was behind them now. They nodded at one another, without saying a word, but they knew what they had to do. It was time to work together and avenge Shelly’s death.
Tragedy held a press conference, for both the contestants in the arena and the citizens in 667 Dark Avenue. By his side was his future queen (Wedding on New Year’s day, in case you’ve forgotten.) “For my first order of business, I’d just like to tell Sophie that I love her. I love you, future wife.” The crowd of citizens cheered. “For my second order of business, I have decided to throw a holiday party for the remaining contestants in the Dark Games. I will send in supplies for baking, singing and other fun Christmas activities, and some Hanukkah stuff for Songbird. Also, no killing will be permitted during the party.”
The contestants were overjoyed that they were now able to celebrate the holidays. Dante and Sherry Ann wrote Christmas cards to all their associates. Fancy started singing a Christmas carol, as Sixteen listened with his eyes to the beautiful song. BSam ran up next to her and started singing along. Pandora and Songbird exchanged gifts. Songbird knit Pandora a sweater, while Pandora lazily got Songbird a baby Jesus doll because she didn’t know Songbird was Jewish. Smooth move, Pandora. The two realized they were enemies again, and were about to kill each other. Tragedy’s voice came on a loud speaker and said “No killing allowed, remember.” Pandora could barely contain the passion she felt from hearing his voice. Anyways, Sixteen was making traditional Irish haggis that his mother used to always make him for Christmas. Tiago Squalor turned on music and they all drunkenly danced for hours.
Back at 667 Dark Avenue, all the other members were having a Christmas party as well. Lemona Snicket and Anka were caroling. BSam came up and started singing loudly next to them as well. Lucas started singing some K-pop songs, which BSam wouldn’t lower himself to singing along with so he left and went back to the arena that he somehow had escaped from. I don’t know why he didn’t just stay out. Dumb move, BSam. Terry Craig sat at the fringes, drinking an Old Fashioned and quietly cursing. Everybody knew that meant he was happy. The townspeople went into the forest and chopped down a tree to put in the courtyard. Tryina and Charlie decorated the tree with ornaments that represented those who had died in the games. Everyone silently wept. Even for Bryan.
They all sat down for dinner, which Emma Squalor had prepared silently before disappearing again. Everybody dug into the delicious turkey, ham, potatoes and desserts that she had prepared. Sixteen had even put his Haggis on the table, but nobody besides Misery ate any. Misery found that he loved it though. “Sixteen, when I normally eat Haggis at home as I often do, it never tastes this good. What is your secret?” asked Misery. Sixteen replied “Well, I put all the normal stuff that is in Haggis, and then I add just a dash of cinnamon.” Misery got a horrified look on his face. “I’m allergic to cinnamon!” he yelled. He stuck his finger down his throat to force himself to vomit, but it was too late. He was extremely allergic to cinnamon, and he died almost instantly. The tone of the party changed to tragic. The participants were about to gather around and mourn, but they heard the clock strike midnight. The party was over, and so they all fled into the woods in different directions.
Tragedy sat at his throne, enraged. He threw this party because it would make him look more compassionate. And it ended up killing his brother. He slammed his fist on the arm of the throne. There had been no cameras on the competition during the party, so nobody in town knew how he was killed. But Tragedy promised to himself right there, that the murderer would pay. The game was about to change.
*Editor’s note – I know what haggis is made of, that’s not the joke. It’s just a funny Irish thing and a funny word. Please don’t make the joke in the comments.

Stay-at-homet: Just updated my profile to express my hopes that everyone stays home and safe. I tried to give my avatar a mask, but it ended up looking more like Patrick from Spongebob in overalls.

Jean Lúcio: Why didn't anyone warn me that I had a translation error in the title of my fanfic?

Jean Lúcio: It should be Silence Knot, not silent Knot ...

Jean Lúcio: Thanks to everyone who read my Fanfic Untie My Silence Knot. I finally finished it.

Sherry Ann: Jean Lucio, I thought the title of the TBL sonnet was "My Silent Knot" for years. It sounds more natural than having those two nouns together. And congratulations on finishing your fanfic!

Jean Lúcio: Thanks! Creating this fanfic at this moment stirred many of my feelings, and I believe that this fanfic reflected my state of mind at this time.
