- - - - - Dear Reader, The word crooked can mean many things, but in the case of THE CROOKED CREEK, it can only mean that whatever the Quagmires had to face while at Cronenberg Colossus Apartments near the Crooked Creek was just as crooked and twisted as the word in this story's title. In this crooked story, the Quagmires encounter such crooked things as two terrible landlords, a reformed former rookie villainess, a runaway scientist, gossipy tennants, a failed attempt of murder and the rise of a terrible new organization. If such crooked things haven't crooked your will to read this crooked story, then please know that this story might crook your very soul. With all due respect, Tiago Squalor

Sounds fantastic! A reformed former rookie villainess - is it as obvious as it seems who that is? Maybe, but I definitely want to hear how that worked out. And of course, you've got to have an organisation. Maybe we've already met them, too. Oh, one last word - I really liked your description of the setting in the previous book. It sounds truly fascinating.

Thanks, Dante. Yes, it appears she's reformed. I've been looking forward to reintroduce YASoUE-originated characters into the plot as opposed to new ones - which I did enjoy writing, I have to say. This marks the beginning of the return from more familiar faces in this series. I personally feel it couldn't have been any earlier, it wouldn't have made sense. I hope everyone enjoys this book.

I definitely think returning characters are one of the highlights of a sequel (or a prequel, for that matter), but I agree that you can't rush it, and given the story you've been telling so far, it wouldn't have made sense earlier. So that's another event to look forward to.

It's interesting, because at the start of each of your new threads everyone focuses on a different aspect in the Dear Reader. "Gossipy tenants" is what caught me this time, although in hindsight that doesn't really make sense when there was a murder attempt and mysterious new organization just down the line. In any case, Tiago, I'm very much looking forward to this. The settings have been heated for a while, so I'm intrigued by the idea of things cooling off - though chilling is probably more accurate - in a creek.

I wonder who the runaway scientist is.

Entrance Hall of Cronenberg Colossus Apartment - - - - - From the journals of Jeremiah Hudson Senior"... a colossal building to the likeness of a medieval tower from afar, but with an interior completely contrastant. I've stayed there for a fortnight with my son, J, and his friend M. The foreboding atmosphere of the surrounding forest adds up to the poorly lit hallways, creating an ominous darkness. The landlords were a pain, however. The bitter old harridan and her enourmous son, who terrorize the tennants who are behind on their rent. I've witnessed some scenes at that place I am not like to forget.." " M left us to go work for some sort of laboratory years ago. It makes me regret never supporting my J the way I should have. He could have been a scientist too, like M, J, but hopefully, not L. No, not one bit like L."

I'd forgotten we had teasers like this, and this one particularly is teasing a number of links which we may or may not recognise. I hope we do recognise them! I kind of wish I had a list of every character in the series so I could go and look up those initials more easily. Interesting to hear a bit more out of Jeremiah Senior, though, even if he isn't around to actively assist any more.

@dante: I rather enjoy doing the teasers and reading everyone's reactions to them. They're my favorite part of the fic promotion. ^^ About the list, Dante, it's a good idea. I might make one, coupled with brief descriptions of all characters as a placeholder for the future YASoUE/AQSoUE-pedia. I'm currently waiting on my tablet so I can draw every character and do them justice to properly start the encyclopedia, as well as illustrate the books. I should get my tablet later this month, hopefully.

Seeing more of your art would be great, too; I've not seen much, but what I have seen was pretty tremendous.

An encyclopedia is the sort of merchandise I wish we had for ASOUE, and your artwork especially is always remarkable. As for this teaser, the new place looks eerie. The initials - do we know any of these people?

- - - - - From the journals of Jeremiah Hudson Senior"... like the other tennants, we had to eat downstairs in the drab living room. It was a measly meal, as the landlord is quite niggardly. Turnips, beans, and thin onion soup. I cannot think of a more unpleasant menu. How I miss the crabs and crayfish from the Bayou." The scene of the crime.

That second caption was brilliantly executed. I started - it all seemed so peaceful, or at least so... banal. Not crime material unless it was some kind of health and safety violation.

I rather thought the chronology of the captions was played perfectly. One minute we're talking about soup - the next, crime.
