Chapter Five: Agents of Change
“What are you talking about?” Linda asked. “Willis, what’s gotten into you?” Bee mumbled. Sherry Ann tugged at his pant leg, concerned. “Oh are we pointing guns at Linda now?” Pandora wondered, joining in. “Whu... what’s going on?” Sophie murmured, waking up. “Tell them,” Willis repeated.
“I work for the Horribly Evil Remote Multinational Espionage Syndicate. We’re here today to take down Duck’s Animal Nesting and Testing Establishment. I thought this was clear?” Everybody’s jaws dropped in shock and they immediately joined Willis in holding Linda at gunpoint. “You lied to us,” Sophie said from above. “I never lied,” Linda replied. “I thought we were all on the same page.” “You never told us you were evil,” Pandora said. “I didn’t think I needed to.” “You dragged us into your dastardly plots,” Sherry Ann piped up from the floor. “You came along willingly.” “You tricked us into helping you,” Bee’s muffled, angry voice said. “You never asked any questions.” “You wanted us to hurt Duck,” Willis said, his voice breaking. “Yes. I did.”
HERMES had existed for many years, long before Agent L had come along. It was established by a shady figure whose face was never seen and whose name was never heard, though he gathered a strong following. They developed weapons and gadgets far beyond anything ever seen before. Their primary mission was to cause mayhem wherever they went, spreading evil across the world. Linda had discovered the organisation at a time when she was most suited for its purposes. Wishing revenge on the roommates that had evicted her, she joined HERMES.
As she rose through the ranks, Agent L grew to love her work. She had dealt with her personal demons and now simply enjoyed the wicked glory that her agency was renowned for. Things were going swimmingly until recently an animal outreach facility popped up on the other side of town. It appeared that one of HERMES’ lower ranking agents had accidentally dropped an intelligence stimulant while scouting near a pond. This was later found by a baby duckling who swallowed it without a second thought. The stimulant kicked in right away and the duckling began thinking second thoughts, third thoughts, and complex ponderings of a philosophical nature. With this added brainpower, he developed technology of his own and founded the establishment known as DANTE.
HERMES was naturally furious that it had inadvertently done some good in the world, and so they became bitter rivals. Knowing that the Tin Diagrams were somewhere in town, Duck led a reconnaissance mission but he was almost run over by a limo. Luckily, the limo driver was of the kind nature that DANTE valued, nursing Duck back to health and treating him as a friend. When his bodyguard found him the following day, Duck wished he had his translation device so that he could thank Willis for everything he had done.
“What will you do with me?” Linda asked as she looked at her captors. Sherry Ann called out the code and Pandora entered it into the keypad. The walls at one end of the room slid open to reveal a boat tied up at a dock. The passage continued into a dark tunnel. “We’re going to meet a friend,” Willis said.

The Horribly Evil Remote Multinational Espionage Syndicate is a perfect acronym.
