Do you think that maybe Snicket (handler) set ASOUE in the time that it happened? Maybe "the city" is Chicago!

Nobody knows for sure where the book takes place, although I like to imagine it was set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia that once used to be London.

This is a can of worms that would be best opened in Perilous Places, and not in a new thread, either. Interesting though the opening angle is, we don't really need another thread that must inevitably turn into a "when and where does the series take place" discussion that can never have any ending because it will never be answered. I won't lock this thread, as that would give the wrong impression - you're absolutely free to discuss this question - but since I can't pick an existing thread out of the many available to fold this query under, I'm going to invite you to do it yourself, or maintain this thread if you can keep it very focussed on the city of Chicago and its infamous fire. I'll at least shift this over to Perilous Places.

I think the reference to Mrs. O'Leary's cow might (but you'd have to ask Terry) be quoted from TheNamelessNovel.com, a site that was used to promote TPP. That was full of all kinds of real-world connections.

Wow, nice memory, Dante. Both the cow quote and the Chicago Fire trvia were indeed from TheNamelessNovel, and the picture does make it pretty clear that it's a joke, just like similar instances in The Unauthorized Autobiography.

Whoever programmed that Sebald code did it wrongly.

Works for me. "Dry the tears and stifle cheers," I think? I haven't double-checked.

I just realized that it couldn't be Chicago because it's nowhere near the sea (Lake Michigan doesn't count).

That was full of all kinds of real-world connections. All I got from it was a memory of a song from girl scout camp... Late last night , when we were all in bed, Old Lady Leary lit a lantern in the shed and when the cow kicked it over, she winked her eye and said it's gonna be a hot time, in the old town, tonight. Fire! Fire! Pour on the water! Pour on the water! Save the Children! Save the Children! Jump lady jump! Huh! I had no idea it was about the Chicago Fire or had any significance whatsoever. Wow. Girl Scout camp had us sing violent songs.

I'd mention ring-a-ring-a-roses being supposedly about the plague, but apparently that's probably not true.
