No, I don't think so. I think it either means Volunteer Fire Detectives or Volunteer Forensic Detectives. Forensic means how a person died, e.g. a forensic detective would study how a person died. I think it is probably the first one. What do forensic things have to do with keeping the world quiet, or extinguished? Also, in LSUA, it has so many clues pertaining mostly to fires.

That puts out secret fires that no one else can see? Cool! Personally, I don't know. Does anyone know what tommarow is? I suppose that fires no one else can see would be metaphorical fires, the question of what the letters mean might be easier to figure out if we knew what they do, other than kidnapping and training children- for what? Also, VFD is written on the on the fireman's hat in the first picture in TBB. This could be a coincidence, though.

I don't think it's volunteer fire department, however. It's too obvious. Maybe the VFD were disguised as firemen when they went to the Baudelaires. I'd need to research this to make sure, and my copy of LSUA is being leant out right now. I think that fire only became a problem for the V.F.D. after the schism, and that before that they would have had a different aim and different name.

I'd have to say I'd go with Volunteer Fire Detectives. It makes the most sense to me. Volunteer Fire Department is too obvious as most people think. Heh, maybe it could even be Volunteers Forever Disguised!
