Just wanted to check with any fellow volunteers out there if my eye tattoo is "acceptable". I mimicked the eye tattoo of Olaf, as represented on the cover of The End. i am happy with it, but I want to make sure its kosher, so to speak. Image is attached. Word to the Wise: If you are thinking about the eye tattoo, great! Just realize the ankle is one of the most sensitive areas of the body to get tattooed because of the bones. So make sure you are ready. Attachments:

The insignia/tattoo isn't illustrated consistently across the series, and it's not described in close detail in the text, so the "acceptable" version is up for debate. Yours is very well-drawn indeed; technically, it should be flipped horizontally, in order to read the hidden letters V-F-D left-to-right - but there's no question that it's absolutely faithful to the cover of The End, and therefore it's absolutely canon to the illustrations. Sometimes technical accuracy is sacrificed upon the altar of visual attraction; if we accept that for an illustration, of course it's acceptable for a true tattoo. Congratulations; you've done well here.

That is fantastic! I'm planning on getting one for www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAdLfsconLY but I think I'll opt for the TUA version, just because there's more clear reference photos for it. And yes, the ankle is quite the painful place to have a tattoo done; I've never more wished that I was overweight.

I was against tattoos myself but I am seriously considering getting the V.F.D one...the question is; which is the canon one? Is there a way to contact Handler and ask? Personally, I prefer the one that is my avatar; but the one with the iris seems to be the 'official' V.F.D symbol; as seen on Madame Lulu's billboard, the tent, Olaf's ankle.

I would never want a tattoo, but if I were to have any, this would be it! It's possible that in the Snicket universe, there is no definitive version of the symbol, but rather the basic image with slight variations; just a possibility seeing as it is so wide-spread, secretive and has supposedly existed for a long time.

There's no answer as to which of the ones you cite is canon, but my theory is that the one in your avatar is used for official documentation, but the design portrayed most accurately on Madame Lulu's billboard (which is sometimes a bit wonky elsewhere) is the one V.F.D. uses when it's trying to blend in. So that's probably the one that shows up on people's ankles, yes.
