Next year we can just call all categories "Most Popular Member" because that's what everyone is doing in the voting anyway.

Oh no, that wouldn't be fair on everyone who isn't me!

I think things should be allowed to compete in the section for which they were nominated. If they are not appropriate, that is something the voters can decide. For instance, if someone who is not compassionate is nominated for 'Most Compassionate', that nomination would still be allowed to stand.
On the other hand, I initially read the nomination of Kyle for 'Make a Bird' as a joke. Could Willis confirm that he meant it as an actual nomination?

If I'm being honest, my nomination of him was partly in jest, not because I don't think he deserves the recognition, but because I didn't think he'd actually win. There are clearly some very deserving people on the ballot as it is. I'm not bothered that he isn't on the ballot (although I would have preferred him there) because he will get his recognition with best thread.
Pretty much every award in the history of awards is something of a popularity contest, including every single Darkies thus far.

The bird thing was a good idea, but it wasn't really organising, it was just having a cool idea and starting a thread and letting people do whatever they want with it, while all people nominated here did stuff like writing PMs to people and trying to get their help and telling them what to do and somehow planning something. That's why make a bird is in the Best Thread poll and not here. But he flipped the picture halfway through!

I did see the make a bird nomination as a sort of half joke. That also happened with some other nominations in other categories which were actually serious, and then the nominating people asked me why it wasn't on the list in the nomination thread, and then I put it there. Nobody asked that for the bird, so I assumed everyone realised it was a joke.

i'm curious why it isn't there for best artist, it would be a feel good moment if the whole forum won an award for that picture.
i do not know if i am joking now or not.

Someone should organise the make a bird awards. There are different categories and make a bird wins.

I was sad make a bird wasn't in best artist too, as most of the people nominated every year are hardly around to care whether they win or not (with the exception of terry craig, whom i voted for because i feel he's been most consistant).

I agree with everything Hermes said and I feel like as an organiser, you shouldn't let your own problems with the Darkies and the way we vote for the winners interfere with the usual way they're done.

I don't think Anka is doing that. She did not include the bird nomination because she thought it was a joke. It read to me like a joke, and Willis confirms that it was half a joke. The bit about popularity was just a passing comment.
I've been thinking, though, about this question of popularity, and it seems to me a lot of the awards are really asking for that anyway - there are no objective criteria for being a good new member, say, or a good pairing, so obviously you'll vote for those you like best. With Best Artist and Best Storytelling there's a bit more objectivity, but still you are going to appreciate the stories of people you like. So I really think it's unavoidable.

There is an argument, however, that if something or someone is popular, then they have to have done something right. I think it's reasonable to interpret the Best New Member as suggesting that you should vote for your favourite, as they're clearly the best to you personally. I guess there's also a question of whether the Best New Member is for somebody who's best at being a new member, or best at being a member in the subcategory of being new.
