I don't think I've ever heard of anyone actually recognising them as Christian allegory as child readers. I know I enjoyed them when I was young; I have a vague recollection of my favourite being The Silver Chair, and my least the rather forgettable The Horse and His Boy.

Narnia is a preachy load of crock. You're a preachy load of crock > The only ones I didn't read were The Silver Chair and The Horse&His Boy. I'm pretty sure I loved The Magician's Nephew the most. The Last Battle was great as well, while I don't think I've finished Prince Caspian (or don't remember it). I might pick up The Silver Chair sometime. I really loved that whole parallel universe kinda fantasy world aspect of Narnia.

could you delete one? i know you didnt mean to but it came out twice.
my only issue with it is whether im meant to read them in the order they were made or the order lewis said we should and if it would affect my understanding of it.

Read them in the order they were written. The Magicians Nephew really doesn't make sense if it is read first; it begins by saying 'This is an important story, because it explains how the comings and goings between our world and Narnia got started', so it clearly assumes you already know about Narnia. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, on the other hand, is about the discovery of a mysterious world, and works better without a context. (As I understand it, Lewis was asked 'Is it it OK to read TMN first, and said 'Yeah, fine', rather than expressing a positive preference.)

As far as I know there's two ways to read the books: in the order they were released, or in chronological order. Both ways are alright and don't spoil anything, but I'd agree with Hermes that the former is likely the more satisfying way to discover the series' universe.

Strictly speaking, absolute chronological order is impossible as one of the books is a midquel.

Very true.
Terry, you should definitely read The Horse and His Boy and The Silver Chair, as they are often seen as two of the best.
Bandit (I am tempted to make a joke about your display name, but that won't work once it changes), their preachiness varies. There is very little religious content in THAHB, again, or in Prince Caspian.

Meh. I've only read The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, and I couldn't handle it enough to go on.

I liked them, really. I got into them after I watched the first movie. My favorite was The Silver Chair. I knew it was hella preachy but with all those religious stuff it was still very good.

I think I listened to the audiobook of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe and I didn't like it because I found the main characters annoying.
