I always wondered why the topic of comics was always so sparse around here. I remember Calvin&Hobbes and Watchmen being mentioned, but that's it, I think, so I decided to make a thread where you have the opportunity to share your love for any specific comics. Comics includes comic strips as well as "graphic novels", a term I'm not very fond of, as comics shouldn't have a special name to make it clear that they are equal to literature, but use whatever term you want. The most recent comic book I finished is the amazing "Sock Monkey Treasury" by Tony Millionaire, a collection of stories featuring the eponymous Sock Monkey and Mr Crow. It's charming, eloquent, surreal, and funny, and at some points quite poetic; especially the last story can move you to tears. The publisher's website offers a 32-page excerpt if you want to check it out. What comics do you like?

The last graphic novel I read was The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil, by Stephen Collins. It was a lot of fun, while at the same time had some sweet introspection, and the pencil drawings are all beautiful.

I love comics, and I agree that Terry Craig don't need extra validation to be considered literature. Comics are capable of being as deep, artistic and thought provoking as any other book, and when they're done well they work in a way that no other form of entertainment possibly can. I don't like it when people dismiss them as trivial or unintelligent. Saga is my favorite ongoing comic. It's a space fantasy, love story, war tale, truly has just about everything. It's as creative and epic as any other story I've ever experienced, in any medium. The artwork is so beautiful too. Fables is about fairy tale characters who are forced out of their homeland and into the real world. It's probably been going on for a bit too long, but I will truly miss it when it ends this year. Great fun seeing all your favorite fairy tale characters interact, and see what they're like beyond the stories that made them famous. The Unwritten is a kind of interesting idea, the inspiration for a Harry Potter esque character finding out that he may actually be the character himself, just in time to protect the real world from the Voldemort character. It confuses me sometimes, but it's great fun and super thought provoking on topics like mortality and fame. Buffy/Angel comics are pretty great, if you liked Buffy and Angel the shows. Umbrella Academy had a short run, but it's coming back soon (fingers crossed) so I'll include it in the ongoings. Just a sensational comic
Past comics I love include the forementioned Watchmen, which is one of the best books of all time. Y the Last Man, a sci fi series where every male of every species dies except one human and his pet monkey. Super interesting Scott Pilgrim, which was fun and very unique. I've always meant to read Sandman by Neil Gaiman, but as of yet haven't gotten to it.
As for comic strips, I don't really read those anymore, but Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes and Foxtrot were enormously important parts of my childhood.

I've always meant to read Sandman by Neil Gaiman, but as of yet haven't gotten to it. I've heard quite a bit about "Y", might check it out sometime. Scott Pilgrim I've also read and it was even more fun than the movie (which I guess is kind of a condensed version). Sandman's also on my to-read list; supposedly mind-blowing etc. I'm too pretentious and educated for comics even the pretentious and educated ones Even for pretentious stuff like Joe Sacco's journalistic comics on Gaza or Palestine? Does it explain quantum theory well for a really cool member? Because I've been meaning to get a grasp on the topic at least roughly and wasn't very successful so far.

Note I was making a joke here. This is further confirmed by the next post I posted right after. It parodies those who believe themselves to e 'above comics.' Subtle humour is usually the best kind.
It assumes competancy with high school level mechanics and knowledge of the atom, i guess. You'd probably need to be familiar with some principles of thermodynamics too. If you're up for something a bit longer, I recently read Quantum by Manjit Kumar which is a really good history of the subject. It does have a wee bit of maths it, but if you can get past that, it goes into a lot of detail about the philosophy of the subject, which seems like it'd be right up your street.

Yep I got that, you even said "jk". Note I just posed a rhetorical question in response. It assumes competancy with high school level mechanics and knowledge of the atom, i guess. You'd probably need to be familiar with some principles of thermodynamics too. If you're up for something a bit longer, I recently read Quantum by Manjit Kumar which is a really good history of the subject. Hm, sounds like I might have to resort to a bit of secondary literature for the comic, although maybe not much; the amazon preview looks fairly accessible. I don't know if I wanna (/can) go into philosophy on quantum physics just yet, but I appreciate the recommendation, I'll bookmark it. _________________________________________________ Oh and the most recent comic strip I read and am actually still reading (I'm taking my time; comic strips are like poems, you can just pick up a book, read a couple, and get back to them whenever) is "Krazy Kat" from around the 1920s. It was one of the first (if not the first) comic strip to be recognized by big literary/artistic figures like F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, Hemingway, Kerouac or even Picasso ( source). Furthermore its author was half-black, but it wasn't really known by the public at the time. It's a wonderfully strange love story with off-beat humour, a surreal setting, very simple premises, and a unique slang dialect spoken by the characters resulting in some terrific poetry through dialogue. Here's a 15-page sample of what it's like if you're interested. Here's probably my favourite one:

I don't like comics, because I never understand what's going on in the pictures. I have to stare at each picture for ages and put the story in words in my head, and that's not that much fun.
