I'd like to think of Bertrand as also a morally ambiguous person. I mean, he's part of the VFD, after all. I am open to the idea that he plays in-between the schism so he and Beatrice may have this Mr. & Mrs. Smith kinda relationship. No questions on his parenting, I guess, since the Baudelaires grew up as they are.
Come to think of it, out of secondary characters, Bertrand is someone we know little to nothing about. Interesting. Anyway, Bertrand being on the fire-starting side of the schism is a nice thought, but if he's simply a goody-two-shoes, that will be fine, too.

Okay, so we all know he's the Baudelaires father, and we all know (I guess) he was Theodora's previous apprentice. But... how decent was he in real life?
Considering who is Theodora and how she acts/thinks, it worries me when in ?3 says:
"[...] Bertrand, her previous apprentice. He was a saint. He never gave her any trouble whatsoever. He was a decent person who never gave anyone reason to lose any sleep. He'd end up married to a wonderful woman and have very charming children, while I languished alone and lonely."
I'm worried about Bertrand's decency/intelligence/moral values. If he is described like that, what can we think of him as an adult or as a volunteer?
I have always thought that Bertrand was the original owner of Olaf's octopus submarine. I have posted a thread on it here: asoue.proboards.com/thread/36194/previous-owner-olafs-submarine. I also find it odd that Beatrice and Bertrand lived unscathed in the city while other VFD associated buildings were burning down. I believe that the simplest explanation is that they were part of the fire-starting side, or at least the fire-starting side thought they were (they may have been double-agents.) (My other theory why there house was not lit on fire until the events of TBB is that they held something the fire-starting side wanted - the sugar bowl - and that's why their house wasn't burnt. But this is not the thread for that.)
