To make the most of this period before the upcoming Netflix series spreads its influence, I started this project to draw approximately every character from A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'll be posting a new character each day. If you're interested to see my progress, please keep an eye on one of the following pages! I'd love it if people might care to comment with their thoughts, suggest how they imagine the character of the day and what might be suitable for the TV series. FacebookTwitterTumblrInstagramThe flat style, consistent through the set, is inspired by religious icons, as icons are a nice way of depicting a character; there is an irony in that all of them have halos. Today's character is Count Olaf! P.S. Each original piece will be on sale for £5, plus postage- please let me know if you're interested in owning any of them

That's a really good initiative; I never thought of how the Netflix series might influence our perception of characters. And you're clearly quite skilled as well. I'll be following this. =)

Thanks! It's often been the case for me that a big production will influence how I imagine a book's characters (because they normally inspire me to read the books in the first place). But sometimes I'll read a book beforehand and then it'll have a big production and searching for it online will never be the same again; for example, I used to be able to get all of the Great Gatsby pictures that I wanted on Google with simple searches, but now I have to add '1974' to everything because Google's been filled with material from the 2013 film. And with Game of Thrones, fans now have to add 'books' if they want to search for character images that aren't inspired by the TV show. Films and TV shows can have a great influence on how the general public imagines something (another example is Harry Potter) to a vast extent. Anyway, this project isn't about Google searches but just to enjoy the chance of exploring the characters before any potential exterior influence in mainstream media

Harry Potter is almost more extreme of an example, because the art on the American edition covers starts to look more and more like Daniel Radcliffe as the series progresses!

I love these, particularly Esme's TPP look.

Thank you! The Esme drawing on Tumblr isn't actually part of the set, but rather something I tried while drawing the #VariousFanDrawings, as a kind of 'visual note' Esme's proper picture is yet to be posted

Your Facebook thumbnail is apparently telling you to stop. I strongly disagree - keep going, because I personally can't wait to see your take on Jerome, an adult Snicket or the oft-Helquistianly-illustrated Baudelaires themselves!

Ah, that's because I want people to understand it if they're reading it via telegram. I'm glad you're interested- thanks a lot! It makes it worthwhile

I'm wondering - are you drawing these from memory, or using the relevant passages from the books for reference? I'm asking because I'm re-reading TWW right now, and at one point Aunt Josephine is so shocked by something the Baudelaires have said that her hands 'flutter to her white hair as if something had jumped onto her head'. Your drawing made me think of that phrase.

Ah that's a lovely passage. Although, the drawings are all from memory- I made some of them while I was away from home and didn't have the books with me, so when I got back read that Olaf wears a wig as Shirley, I had to re-paint his grey hair blonde and make a clear line where it was once attached to his head Despite this, some will refer to specific scenes, like Milt carrying muffins and Lou holding the newspaper

By the way, is there any particular reason why you've chosen his Shirley disguise? Are you going to draw the rest of his aliases? Also, how many characters did you end up doing? There must be quite a lot, if you're going into such minor characters as Milt and Lou (sorry about all the questions - I'm beginning to feel like Moxie Mallahan throwing questions at Lemony ). I think my favourite drawing so far is Hector. I like his facial expression, and although it took me a moment to realise that the lines in the background are crows, I think they work really well aesthetically. The whole thing makes me happy to look at.

No problem! It's nice to be asked about them ha I thought that I should draw Olaf in a disguise, as it's his thing, and Shirley's probably a good one for that because it looks the most like a man in disguise (probably because he's dressed as a lady). There will only be one Olaf drawing So far, I've posted six out of a set of thirty-eight finished drawings. There are sixteen that I'm still finishing- there should be fifty-four in total. I've drawn more or less every named character that appears, including names like 'woman with dyed hair', although some are included in collective groups in an image. I'm glad that you like Hector- thanks! By the way, I've drawn the man with pimples on his chin from The Carniverous Carnival; I remember his mother calling him Reece, but I couldn't find this quoted when I checked. Do you or anybody else know if this is right, or did I make it up?
