hot take: mbdtf doesn't live up to its title, i was really disappointed and never re-listened to it since bc of that. he fantasizes about being a hedonistic rockstar while realizing that it's a funked up thing to want. did u think it was gonna be horrorcore or what

EDIT: I like his beats though, and damn, i forgot i did listen to yeezus lol. it was good, didn't wow me, however, as it might have when it came out.

it's not about HIS mind, it's about the minds of all poor black americans who are fooled by the american dream. when he finally makes it, he realizes the dream is actually dark and twisted because all it did was make him an asshole who can't express his feelings, on top of still being treated with prejudice. it's not supposed to be relatable. it's the opposite of "we're actually the same." it's supposed to be a warning and something of an anticapitalist credo, where his life is deliberately portrayed as a perversion of what all our lives should be.
it's not a subject he only cares about now that he's rich and feels sorry for himself, it's the same exact message as All Falls Down on his first album. he knew in 2004 that it was corruptive to strive so hard to be rich, and he knows in 2010, now that he is rich, that he's a worse person for it.

so he riffed on the "scarface" story (with him being scarface, of course), the film all rappers loved ever since it came out, back in 1983, and that flick doesn't impress me either *shrug*

i mean, "money doesn't make you happy" is a lot older than scarface, but yeah, i'm not saying it's deep or original. it's still a legitimate idea to pursue, and it's conveyed perhaps more effectively through mbdtf than any other rap album. just because it's not the message you wanted doesn't mean it's not an artistic achievement.
as far as flix go it reminds me more of la dolce vita.

try being a 50 year old in a virtual cartoon band (sharing stages with 20 y/olds). anyway, it's fun to see someone have fun, middle aged or not, but i don't really see what's so real about it.
