the show starts off shaky, but it grows into itself and has some really excellent episodes.

Also guys, did you know Michael Keaton did stand up comedy before he started acting?? He was pretty bad. Ok, I guess not that bad. Amusing, but at most in a way an uncle might be at a family dinner party. He's definitely a better actor.

Ooh, I forgot about Rory Scovel and remembered just now, watching a recent video of him on Conan. His 2011 Dilation album is really great, but he's always good, really.

I've known of Stewart Lee for, like, 3 years now and have given him a number of tries, but mostly I've been just bemused by his work. After seeing a 20-min bit on pear cider today, I've finally come to the opinion that he's not that funny. He's very clever and has got very good comedic timing, but the jokes are just too scholarly to make me laugh. At best I am impressed by his eloquence with words and his delivery, and at worst I'm frustrated by his long-windedness or over-reliance on concept (one of his bits about a cab driver repeatedly saying "Nowadays..." is a good example). I once saw a video of his stand up with his commentary on top, deconstructing everything he does, and it's fascinating, but this scientific approach to comedy is very apparent in his work and is a turn off for me.
Sorry for the rant - tldr: my casual on-off relationship with Lee's work has been long and I thought I'd write down why I've decided it's not for me.

Eddie Izzard. I’ve adored him for years. He’s really more clever than laugh-out-loud funny, but the utterly surreal scenarios he conjures with that bizarre imagination of his, as well as his atypical subject matter and tendency toward physical comedy (particularly mime) swiftly won me over.
Apart from that, I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with him a few times over the years and he is a genuinely lovely person.
Other favorites: Bill Hicks Mitch Hedberg Frankie Boyle Maria Bamford Scott Thompson (all of the Kids in the Hall, really, but he has the strongest stand-up material of any of them) Garfunkel & Oates Doug Stanhope

He's got a stream-of-consciousness style going that can be hit-or-miss, but I think he manages to always turn around a semi-bombing moment into something else that's hilarious, and those moments themselves also become exciting to watch. I love his nonsensical monologues and changing dialects between songs, but if you just like the music stuff, he's doing a lot of it, too, though.
