I'm so excited to learn more about the SUE world!
At first I assumed that this was just the tie-in books for season 2 being put up for pre-ordering a little far in advance, but the description actually makes it seem like new material. If it really is a commentary on the show written by Handler (or better yet, by Snicket), I'm all in!

Exciting news. I don't normally bother with tie-in editions, but if this contains unique insights then I could well be tempted to take a look.

The Book Depository is now showing tie in editions for books 5-8. The Austere Academy. (1/22/18) www.bookdepository.com/Series-Unfortunate-Events-5-Lemony-Snicket/9781460755921Description: NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES As the three Baudelaire orphans warily approach their new home Prufrock Preparatory School, they can't help but notice the enormous stone arch bearing the school's motto Memento Mori or "Remember you will die." This is not a cheerful greeting and certainly marks an inauspicious beginning to a very bleak story just as we have come to expect from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, the deliciously morbid set of books that began with The Bad Beginning and only got worse. The Ersatz Elevator. (1/22/18) www.bookdepository.com/Series-Unfortunate-Events-6-Lemony-Snicket/9781460755938 Description: NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIESIn their most daring misadventure, the Baudelaire orphans are adopted by very, very rich people, whose penthouse apartment is located mysteriously close to the place where all their misfortune began. Even though their new home in the city is fancy, and the children are clever and charming, I'm sorry to say that still, the unlucky orphans will encounter more disaster and woe. In fact, in this sixth book in A Series of Unfortunate Events, the children will experience a darkened staircase, a red herring, an auction, parsley soda, some friends in a dire situation, a secret passageway, and pinstripe suits. Both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted, A Series of Unfortunate Events offers an exquisitely dark comedy in the tradition of Edward Gorey and Roald Dahl. Lemon Snicket's uproariously unhappy books continue to win readers, despite all his warnings. The Vile Village. (1/22/18) www.bookdepository.com/Series-Unfortunate-Events-7-Lemony-Snicket/9781460755945NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Dear Reader, You have undoubtedly picked up this book by mistake, so please put it down. Nobody in their right mind would read this particular book about the lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire on purpose, because each dismal moment of their stay in the village of V.F.D. has been faithfully and dreadfully recorded in these pages. I can think of no single reason why anyone would want to open a book containing such unpleasant matters as migrating crows, an angry mob, a newspaper headline, the arrest of innocent people, the Deluxe Cell, and some very strange hats. It is my solemn and sacred occupation to research each detail of the Baudelaire children's lives and write them all down, but you may prefer to do some other solemn and sacred thing, such as reading another book instead. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket The Hostile Hospital. (1/22/18) www.bookdepository.com/Series-Unfortunate-Events-8-Lemony-Snicket/9781460755952Description: NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES The Baudelaires need a safe place to stay-somewhere far away from terrible villains and local police. A quiet refuge where misfortune never visits. Might Heimlich Hospital be just the place? In Lemony Snicket's eighth ghastly installment in A Series of Unfortunate Events, I'm sorry to say that the Baudelaire orphans will spend time in a hospital where they risk encountering a misleading newspaper headline, unnecessary surgery, an intercom system, anesthesia, heart-shaped balloons, and some very startling news about a fire. :Edit: Books 1-8 Netflix Tie-In Boxset. (2/19/18) www.bookdepository.com/Series-Unfortunate-Events-1-8-Netflix-Tie-Box-Set-Lemony-Snicket/9781460756089Description: Synopsis coming soon.......

Curious that there's no listing for a ninth book, even in the tie-in boxset. Maybe they're releasing them in sets of four, even if the actual TV series it's tying into isn't working to the same pattern.
Edit: January and February releases? Excuse me while I try not to get too excited about these likely placeholder dates.

I really like the TAA and THH book covers because they look like they were actually posed for book covers, rather than the weird photoshopping of the first 4.

Adopting the disguise switch from the original Ex Libris images is definitely a choice I'm glad of, though I suspect they'll only do it for this volume (given that they've left THH as is). It's curious that Sunny doesn't feature on the TVV cover, though; I notice (actually, this has been echoed in one of the other threads in which these covers are being discussed) that it's probably a homage to the painting American Gothic, which of course features no baby.

Yes, I also like the swapping of Olaf and the Baudelaires, but I think probably THH should have had it too. I still hope they continue it in future novels - though maybe this is unlikely.
I think Olaf's costume for TCC looks brilliant (both on the cover and in other marketing we've seen) but the children on the TCC cover look a lot more terrifying and disturbed than I expected. Perhaps it wouldn't look so horrible if I saw the cover in real life but they look more like they come from a horror movie poster than a children's television series.

Yes, I also like the swapping of Olaf and the Baudelaires, but I think probably THH should have had it too. I still hope they continue it in future novels - though maybe this is unlikely. What I suspect is that they only swapped it for TCC because all three Baudelaires are disguised in that book - and not just two of them. This is also the case for TSS, unless they want to use eggplant Sunny; and in TGG they aren't disguised at all. THH also has the factor that Olaf still uses a disguise in that book, especially in the Netflix version. So I suppose it's possible that they'll switch them again for TPP, which also has all three Baudelaires disguised and Olaf not. If we compare to the books, the switch in the Ex Libris styles from Olaf being disguised to the Baudelaires being disguised also only began in TCC, now that I check it again, so it's possible that they're being extremely faithful to the originals here - although I suspect not; five books with the protagonists barely featuring on the cover is quite a long streak, and the TCC decision may have been influenced by what you yourself suggest, that the Baudelaires' appearance is shockingly different for that installment. But if we're honest, given that the Baudelaires did not consistently disguise themselves for the latter half of the series, the Ex Libris style swap didn't work as well as we might like to think it did.

I think it would work well if they played around with the ex libris swaps for the next few volumes, and eventually ended up with both Olaf and the Baudelaires in the main picture for The End, with Lemony in the top spot. As far as the wide grin of Gunther and confident smirk of Dupin go, they're starting to look like novelty author photographs anyway.
(Imagine looking at the covers with no prior knowledge and seeing that: The top picture of books 1-8 being who you presume to be the author in various setting-appropriate outfits. Then, come book 9, he's just decided to take up the entire cover himself and leave only that small space for the actual characters of the book.)

These continue to be well executed, although I don't think I approve of Gunther smiling so happily on TEE. Together with the next two book covers it makes him seem much less like the villain/antagonist of the series, and more, like Comet points out, like the well-meaning author to outsiders.
