So: A novel, and definitely in the Lemony world. Interesting. Also, notable that they actually describe it as Middle Grade, though the stated age-band makes it borderline MG/YA, and I'm sure lots of people will reflexively call it YA, as they do with all young people's fiction that has any depth to it.

Penguin Random House Canada has brought us a synopsis: --- Unfortunately, this book opens with some very bad news: Lemony Snicket has been poisoned. He'll have to work quickly to get to the bottom of a sinister plot, or this adventure may be his last. But this is Lemony Snicket, so be prepared for an investigation like no other -- one that will take readers on a bewitching journey through breakfast ingredients and philosophy, existential questions and observations about writing, death and the preperation of a good egg. Hopefully this witty, inspiring tour-de-force won't prove fatal. --- (Edit: Oh, that dodgy coding is a tab! It just displayed as odd coding on the original page.) The part about preparing a good egg reminds me of the beginning of "Who Could That Be At This Hour?" If you remember, the Hemlock Tearoom and Stationery Shop has the worst eggs anywhere in the city, including those on display in the Museum of Bad Breakfast, where visitors can learn just how bad eggs can be prepared.

It's worth noting that I accidentally missed a line from the original synopsis (or maybe it wasn't there at the time):

I knew it--"stand-alone" book.
Kind of gives me Horseradish type of vibes (at least partly), though I hope the story won't make way for such gimmickry. Could also be a post-modern type of thing (more so than usual with Snicket). Tbh I don't really know what to make of that synopsis.

doesn't sound like a novel to me. i'm still getting 13 suspicious incidents vibes, or maybe Interactive in some way

It took me a little while to understand what I found just so weird about the synopsis - but I eventually realised that it's seriously out-of-character. Most synopses of Snicket narrative books are either written by him or similarly written as a kind of sincere, idiosyncratic comment on the story. This synopsis reads like somebody's review; like a sales pitch, and not by Snicket. I would be surprised if this ended up being what was on the back cover of the actual book. (It even has a spelling mistake.)
It's all to do with the bizarre way this book has been revealed, which is that it's really just been leaked in fragments by the Canadian publisher. Things might look different when the American publishers get around to announcing their version.

I'm a little disappointed that this isn't a series. It would have been fun to have some Arson for Lunch (Dante). I agree that the description is weird. For all the other books it's from Lemony's perspective as he wrote it, but this is a more tradition book description. It's curious if this book will lend itself to the larger mythology of the series. Will we get a sugar bowl in here? Will this be one of the reasons why people think lemony is dead? There are so many question in the air now and it's making me go a bit mad.

Willing to bet good money on this being a novel, not a short stories collection, and also on it being one-off.

Well this is highly exciting; I've been longing to know what the next Snicket book would be. And, as bizarre a comment as this might be, I really love the way DH/LS describes food so this sounds amazing.

In the book description it says stand-alone book. "A new stand-alone middle grade novel by New York Times bestselling author, Lemony Snicket."
