So, do people think we'll finally get an official answer for what's in the sugar bowl? I doubt it?? but the way the show is emphasizing that plotline made me wonder. I don't know, maybe ... I would doubt it, but then they are already being more explicit about various things than the books were -- i.e. we already have direct confirmation that V.F.D. stands for Volunteer Fire Department, whereas in the books it was never actually officially confirmed (until ATWQ -- and before that, sort of in The End), even though everyone essentially knew it to be the case.

Also, notice how the show refers to it as "the V.F.D." which is weird.

I think we're all asking the wrong questions. We need to focus on the important things; most important being: how is destroying the tagliatelle grande at the carnival going to affect the plot in future books?

Just finished watching the Austere Academy episodes. I really enjoyed them. After a nine hour shift at work - these episodes were what I needed. I loved how both Olivia and Jacques were introduced earlier than they were in the books. It was also interesting that the Netflix version of Olivia was not already a V.F.D. member. I wasn't sure what to make of the moments between Violet and Duncan - I assume it was because they have respect for one another, rather than romantic feelings?

I like Netflix Olivia, but I found book Olivia more compelling because she was morally grey (to put it very kindly) which made for some quite creepy/tense moments and also helped develop the 'moral dilemma; theme of the later books. However, setting that aside, Netflix Olivia is still a good character -- and I really liked how she rolled along on her book trolley. I want to do that! I'm really not a fan of them hinting towards Violet and Duncan. In the books they really just seemed like very close friends to me, especially given Violet's obvious attachment to Quigley -- as we know that they have certainly included the waterfall scene in season 3, though, I think it's fairly safe to assume they will be pursuing Violet and Quigley and hopefully that means they won't try to push Violet and Duncan anymore. I like them just being friends.

It's really interesting the way they are handling the Mystery in the show. It's moving a lot faster then in the books. Which makes sense they moved it up in season one so you had to move everything up in this season. It was interesting that they now know Volunteer Fire Department. I'm curious now that most of the mysteries are revealed if they will add new mysteries to pad out season 3 because right now we really only have the sugar bowl mystery. I still feel like we won't get an answer even though I think the sugar bowl will be in the forefront of season 3.
The spy glasses are fine to me. I feel like they were a good addition even though they ultimately didn't go anywhere. There were just a good way to introduce VFD sooner. They make sense as a tool for VFD but it would also be fine without it.
I loved the VFD Ball flashback I'm hoping we get more of those next season.
Now that we know (or pretty sure) that Jacqueline is not Kit. She feels really unnecessary to me. I wonder where her arc is going now.
Larry is such a sad character I really do love him. He was in this season a little more then he needed to be but he was still a nice addition.
I'm curious how they will handle the Troop leaving in TSS. I really like how they are building Fernald's character. But the others aren't doing much so it will feel odd to me when they decide to just walk away. I feel like they should have killed them off when they were supposed to die.
I'm really looking forward to season 3. I'm happy we are getting a conclusion.

I just had a thought about the woman in the taxi. It makes sense for it to be Kit since we first see Kit in TPP driving a taxi but....
If it is Kit why isn't she pregnant?
That is such an important part of the book it seems odd that they would cut from The End. Why doesn't Lemony know his own sister?
I don't know what to think anymore. Is it Beatrice or is it the Duchess of Winnipeg?

Why would Beatrice pass herself a note at the ball?[/quote] The note was ment for Lemony. So it could be Beatrice warning Lemony. She was prepared after all being dressed as a Firefly with working wings. I do see your point. I don't think it is Beatrice but I'm just question if it is Kit

They’re doing so much better with musical themes this season - Carmelita and Esme both have themes that play whenever they show up. TVV, THH, and TCC has such distinct musical vibes, it was fantastic. And they wove in some other stuff, like Beatrice’s theme. Really good stuff. I have to say though, I really don’t like shoehorning Mr. Poe in these episodes. There’s a difference between (1) not noticing something terrible, and (2) noticing something terrible and deciding it’s not terrible. Poe has had an uneasy shift from (1) to (2). ^ This, I didn't like either, I'm like there was a point in the novel that the Baudelaires realized he was useless other than providing a cough, yet I was surprised that the series kept placing Poe at every new location they were at. Vile Village (didn't the Baudelaires arrive by bus to this town in the novel?), Heimlich Hospital, Carnivorous Carnival. By flooding the show with Poe they are killing the potential enjoyment moment when Baudelaires meet Poe again in Book 11 at the Hotel Denouement. I also don't like that Poe's wife Elanor is doubling as Geraldine Julienne of the Daily Punctilio in the novel. Geraldine was a character I really wanted to see when she appears in the later books as she gets real close to Esme as like her personal reporter.

You've just reminded me of an interesting point -- I cant remember which episode it was, but in the V.F.D. tunnels, there was a sign marked 'Julienne'. I assume it was just a little nod for book fans, but still, it was interesting ...
And yeah, I need to check again because at the time I just didn't see if Kit(?) was pregnant or not.

I was actually just thinking about that this morning, that Kit should be very heavily pregnant. I checked the end of TCC to get another look at her and the way she stands when getting out of the taxi, her abdomen is completely obscured by the car door so it's impossible to tell. Which is good; being obviously pregnant would take away the suspense of her identity, but it still leaves room for her to be pregnant when she is introduced to the Baudelaires. I'm fairly certain it is Kit.

Ah interesting, if she was heavily pregnant, remember she was at the hospital to retrieve the sugarbowl, maybe she got a check up thus the hold up? Unlikely and silly I know lol

One thing I've been wondering, and it may not really come to anything, is how Fernald's fondness for Sunny in the Netflix version will change The Grim Grotto. I imagine not very much, but in the book it took a while to persuade him to help the Baudelaires, but in the show he obviously likes Sunny quite a bit (albeit in an odd way, considering he's still participating in schemes to ruin her life & steal her fortune), so I wonder if he'll still be so reluctant.

This article has some nice little pieces of information about season 2's sets. "Season two is just unbelievable. It starts in Prufrock Preparatory School that has a full school inside, with old-timey bricks on the wall and an outside, football-sized field that was all on the soundstage. And then they moved to The Ersatz Elevator book, which is an entire town they built on soundstage, including a penthouse with elevators," he explained to us and a group of other journalists. "Remarkable." Harris went on to note that for the Vile Village set, they built an entire town on a single soundstage. That means they didn't need to film interior shots elsewhere; each and every building you see was fully functional inside as well. "We would film in the actual buildings themselves. The firehouse was a fully-formed firehouse as a part of this giant town," he said. "Then you end up in a hospital, and it's a fully-realized, disastrous, scary, horror movie hospital. And we end up in the carnival with a giant circus tent in the middle, with an operational rollercoaster that's decrepit that goes around . . . I mean, these sets are massive." www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Where-Series-Unfortunate-Events-Filmed-44713282
