Hounds of the Morrigan has the best cover (and the synopsis sounds alright for a fantasy book). As an impartial 3rd party, i.e. not having to read the thing, I'd vote for that.

So I looked into the book and availability is kind of spotty - it's not available in my local library or any libraries around the area. It's not available on Kindle or E Reader formats. Is anyone else having this issue?

I've had a look at the amazon listing or THotM and it's available very cheaply -- used copies from £1.82 plus £2.80 postage in the UK, so I suppose that wouldn't be too dissimilar a price from an ebook version? But obviously it depends how much people are willing to spend.

But obviously it depends how much people are willing to spend. I've never ordered something overseas so I'm concerned about how quickly it will get here. By the looks of it, it won't be here until the end of July or the beginning of August. If everyone else is okay with this, I will go ahead and confirm we can use this book.

You can get it on the US version of Amazon too at a similar price, if that helps?

All right, so let's get this started!
So the first thing that comes to mind when starting the book is the old book shop. I realize this book was written in the 80s. How many people have been to a book store now that isn't a large chain?

I actually spend every Friday in an independent bookshop where I sit and do drawings. It's so much more interesting than the chain shops, and there are always obscure or fascinating books, especially as a lot are ordered in specifically on requests from customers.
I've always loved the idea of stumbling upon some strange/magical/old artifact in a curiosity shop, so I always feel that Pidge's discovery is such a good beginning to the whole adventure.

But how would you feel if suddenly the sky opened up and all of IKEA landed at your feet?
And why did this book pick Pidge

Haha, well that's a different kettle of fish ... But any strange and mysterious happenings would certainly intrigue me! And I'd like to see nuns cartwheeling.
I think it picked him because he just happened to be there. It saw him as a route to freedom, as it were.
What do you think of the characters so far? One of the things I love about this book is that every character seems so interesting and complete -- there are no unimportant secondary characters, only characters who aren't the main focus of this particular story. My favourite, though, will always be Brigit (although there is another character who arrives later on who is a very close second place).

Brigit definitely is my favorite so far. Even though she's 5, it seems like she's already got a lot of insight into the world. However, I think that the book has her say things 5 year old kids wouldn't say.
