I am not completely sure if this is the correct place to put this thread, but this is an idea I have been mulling over this week.
What if other musical artists perform the Gothic Archies' songs from the Tragic Treasury? Who would you have sing the songs if you could pick other singers? Or would you set them to non-lyrical tunes by Bach, Beethoven, or Brahms?
Here is the list of songs, in case you need them:
1. Scream and Run Away 2. In the Reptile Room 3. The World is a Very Scary Place 4. Dreary, Dreary 5. When You Play the Violin 6. This Abyss 7. Crows 8. Smile! No One Cares How You Feel 9. Freakshow and/or Walking My Gargoyle 10. How Do You Slow This Thing Down? 11. A Million Mushrooms 12. Things are not What They Appear 13. Shipwrecked
I have to think about this more before I make my own list.

Scream and Run Away = by David Byrne I always thought Merritt's "run, run, run (etc), or die, die, die (etc)" part in this song was an homage to The Talking Heads' “Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est / Fa-fa-fa-fa (etc), far better / Run, run, run (etc), run away”. Alternatively, Byrne's voice would also be very suited for When You Play the Violin.
Dreary, Dreary = Nick Cave A very Cave-ish song; it'd be cool to see what he'd do with it. Maybe I'm thinking here more of a young, Birthday Party-era Nick Cave with punkier vocals, but whatever.
This Abyss = Damon Albarn Albarn would suit Merritt's songwriting style well, I think. His work with The Good The Bad &The Queen has especially that kind of feel. We Are the Gothic Archies actually sounds a lot like a TGTB&TQ track lol. Any Gothic Archies song would likely work. This Abyss in particular has a bit of a Gorillaz feel, á la On Melancholy Hill.
Crows = Beck Hansen? This feels like a song Beck would cover, and Beck has displayed an affinity for Cole Porter-type songs with his Song Reader album.
Smile! No One Cares How You Feel / Things Are Not What They Appear = Tom Waits Both songs display the kind of humour Waits also enjoys, and I could imagine his voice with these.
Shipwrecked = Father John Misty? I just think the Padre would enjoy the twisted humour in the lyrics and the love song genre subversion.
Walking My Gargoyle = Wayne Coyne (from the Flaming Lips) I think Coyne would do justice to any Gothic Archies song, and I think his open-minded approach to song crafting in the studio is similar to Merritt's. This song is great, but I'd also be interested in Coyne trying some of The Tragic Treasury's (imo) lesser tracks, like The World is a Very Scary Place, In the Reptile Room, or the somewhat better Freakshow.
How Do You Slow This Thing Down = St. Vincent She'd be a good fit for any of these songs, probably, but this is one of the one's that are left here, and she could probably improve on Merritt's recording. I can imagine her also doing a great Walking My Gargoyle (maybe Freakshow, too).
EDIT: Wow I spent more time on this than I intended to, lol

I think I am going to have to look up all those people because I have never heard of them.
I am picking classical composers, so I am imagining the songs without words.
1. Scream and Run Away - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Why not start things off with a bang?
2. In the Reptile Room - J.S. Bach This song would sound interesting as a Bach invention with lots of counterpoint.
3. The World is a Very Scary Place - Ludwig van Beethoven I can already hear a chorus singing this song in very strict rhythm just like the 9th.
4. Dreary, Dreary - Johannes Brahms I am imagining this in the style of a Brahms symphony. (And yes, I do realize I just put the three B's right in a row.)
5. When You Play the Violin - Bedrich Smetana If this was in the style similar to the Moldau, the melody would become very grand.
6. This Abyss - Edvard Grieg This song would sound elegant as a Grieg piano work.
7. Crows - Edward Elgar Have you heard the Enigma Variations? Maybe there could even be a bit of turning this song major for a little bit.
8. Smile! No One Cares How You Feel - George Frideric Handel Because this song is so short, I think it would work in the style of one of the recitatives from The Messiah.
9. Walking My Gargoyle - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky This song is very dance-llike, and it may sound good in a style similar to one of Tchaikovsky's ballets.
10. How Do You Slow This Thing Down? - Gustav Holst I think this could be like one of the planets.
11. A Million Mushrooms - Felix Mendelssohn What if this got performed in the style of the Reformation symphony?
12. Things are not What They Appear - Frederic Chopin Maybe it's because this song already has a haunting piano line, but I can hear the entire thing in a depressing yet ornate piano style.
13. Shipwrecked - Antonin Dvorak I couldn't not put Dvorak here, what with his 9th symphony having the musical line which was stolen for Jaws.
There are too many good composers I am sure I am leaving out!
