As those of you who have kindly been following my ASOUE illustration thread may recall, I have been illustrating Harry Potter for some time now. I've only posted a few on 667 before now, but I recently came to a momentous decision. After completing my 177th Harry Potter illustration, which took me to the last few chapters of Order of the Phoenix ... I decided to start over. Completely.
The thing is, I started illustrating Harry Potter about six-ish years ago now, and it was my first proper foray into illustration. Illustrating Harry Potter has quite literally shaped my life; I totally fell in love with illustration because of this project, and I'm now pursuing it as a career path. However, when I look back at many of my earlier Harry Potter illustrations, I cringe. They're so bad. As time has gone on, I have grown to loathe the borders I decided to draw around every illustration; when I look at them now, the borders are all I can see. And I really wasn't enjoying the process of creating the illustrations nearly as much as I once was. I felt absolutely hemmed in and I began to realise that the old format I had begun with was holding me back. I had just outgrown it, and continuing to use it was resulting in substandard illustrations.
So, about a week or so ago, I decided enough was enough and that I was going to just start all over again, and so that is what I have done. I thought I might as well share my illustrations on here as I go along, as they might be of interest to some people.
The first illustration is perhaps slightly unusual: I'm not sure if anyone's ever taken the time to draw the doughnut Uncle Vernon buys in the first chapter of Philosopher's Stone before, but I really wanted to, so I did. So without further ado, here we go: my NEW Harry Potter illustrations!
'He'd forgotten all about the people in cloaks until he passed a group of them next to the baker's. He eyed them angrily as he passed.
He didn't know why, but they made him uneasy. This lot were whispering excitedly, too, and he couldn't see a single collecting tin. It was on his way back past them, clutching a large doughnut in a bag, that he caught a few words of what they were saying.'
