As those following the Upcoming Books Thread may be aware, the already-delayed Poison for Breakfast by Mr. Snicket seems increasingly unlikely to meet the Fall 2019 release date given on Daniel Handler's page on his agency website, Steven Barclay Agency - owing to it now being fall with no news on the book having appeared for over a year. Seeking clarity, I submitted a question about the book's release date to the publisher, Hachette Book Group USA (owners of Little, Brown & Co.), and received the following response: Considering that the book was originally announced in 2018 for publication September of that year, a delay of three years (or two and a third years at a minimum) seems dramatic; and yet it is undeniable that the existing delay is already a significant one. What is happening with Poison for Breakfast? Sadly, we can only speculate - and hope that the release date is brought forward to a somewhat sooner point.

I hope that doesn't mean it's not ever going to be published. Does that ever happen, where a work just gets dropped entirely?
I hope Quisby is right.

I was just coming on here to check if news if the book since I thought it was going to be releasing next month. And this news has made my day an unpleasant one. Hopefully the days are a good thing. Maybe the story got too big for one book and maybe it's a trilogy of meals. But one can only hope.

Robin Stevens already claimed Arsenic For Tea, I suppose. Perhaps the two could be sold as a double-pack.

The first delay could be put down to a confluence of events, mainly that whole Wesleyan speech controversy and the "new" release date being the 20th anniversary of the entire series. However, this new delay makes me think that the book is being reworked in some significant way.
Perhaps the publishers/Handler are planning to turn Poison For Breakfast from a standalone book into some kind of new series, or at least the first in a sequence of new Snicket books which may or may not be connected in some way.

I'm definitely of the opinion that the original delay was a knee-jerk response while the publishers monitored whether any of Handler's then-controversies would cause serious damage. They didn't, but it is theoretically possible that the further delays have been used as an opportunity to rework the book - though I won't get my hopes up without evidence. It's entirely possible, sadly, that Snicket is such a low priority for Little, Brown & Co. that they're willing to hold back his latest book for quite a long time to plug a potential gap in their release schedule.

It will be interesting to see how this book is marketed, given that promotion for the All the Wrong Questions began about 1-2 years before the books' actual publication. Given that ATWQ sold well enough but didn't do the blockbuster numbers of the original ASOUE books, I wonder how successful Poison for Breakfast will be. I don't doubt that it will be profitable, but if we want to get more than a standalone book every half decade or so it will have to do pretty well.

What disappointing news. I’m going to join Quisby in hoping this means it will be quite a significant event when it is published. Perhaps DH has a number of other projects he wants to focus on first, but has big plans for PFB which he doesn’t want to rush.

Some good news, or at the very least a potential update on the book, as BookDepository now claim the release is June 1st of next year.
