I suggest creating a guide for neophytes who have entered here. Containing explanations for placing images, creating quotes, suggestions for behavior to avoid around here (like talking about someone's mother) and suggestions for content, and how often to post things, explain how the annual award works, and things like that. It would also be nice to have a brief description of the oldest members of the forum so that the person can update themselves about who their companions are. What do you think?

There have been discussions of instating an "About" section, which differs from a Guidelines page in that it offers a broader account of purpose and membership. It has yet to be written, but I still think it would make a valuable addition to the navigation bar (or as a preface to the newcomer thread?).

That seems like a fine idea, although admittedly I would have thought this could be outlined without a great many words.

I think that's the point - it hasn't been put in a few words, and we no longer have the New York Times quote at the top of the page to orient (and impress) the visitor. Perhaps a few lines of description like that could work instead of an About page per se.
