In the book, they only get the upper hand on Olaf because they briefly figure out how to take advantage of an absurd and uncaring world the same way he does. But, like I said, the show does a much better job with this later. “What do you really want?” “To burn children!” from TVV is coming to mind. And of course this idea fits in very well with theme raised in the latter half of the series about how using Olaf's methods helps the Baudelaires get what they want (at least, in the short term) at the cost of eroding their code of ethics.
