Since I am quite a fan of Roald Dahl's book (as I'm no doubt sure some of you are as well) I've been eagerly looking forward to Robert Zemeckis' new adaptation of his book The Witches. However, after it finished principal photography, exactly a year ago today, it seems to have practically vanished.
It was originally set to come out in October but due to COVID-19 it has now been pushed back to an unknown date in 2021. Since there has been neither negative or positive buzz about this movie, I found it strange that not much about it is actually known and so little marketing has been done.
So I decided to gather all the information I could find out about it here. It does appear to be changed quite heavily from the book, but given that it already received a very faithful adaptation in 1990, it doesn't bother me too much.
In 1967, a young boy is orphaned and sent to live with his grandmother in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. While there his grandmother tells him stories about Witches including her own youthful encounter with them. However, after discovering that these very same Witches are in their town, the grandmother whisks the boy off to one of the most opulent sea-side resorts in the South. Unfortunately, they have arrived at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from all around the world to carry out her nefarious plans. At the same time, he also discovers that his pet mouse Daisy is actually a little girl who was transformed into a mouse by a Witch and unfortunately, The Grand High Witch plans to do the same thing to every child on the planet. After being caught and transformed into a mouse by the Witches along with a boy called Bruno Jenkins, all three children must team up with the boy's grandmother to help stop the Grand High Witch's evil plan.
Ironically enough, despite the movie's setting being moved from the UK to the USA, the movie was still shot mostly in the UK.
Outdoor set for the movie being constructed in front of Virginia Water Lake in Surrey.
