Hello all, even though we are scheduled to begin the TMM rewatch tomorrow, please feel free to keep posting in the TBB, TRR, TWW, and 2004 Movie threads as much as you like. I don't want anyone to feel like they're obligated to only post in certain threads at certain times. The schedule is really more of a rough guideline and the main object of these rewatches is for people to have a free and relaxed space to talk about the film/tv adaptations of these great books. Thanks again to tk for their incredible work on getting this rewatch together in the first place.

I wish they had changed the word from 'inordinate'. Considering I don't think they use it again ever in the show, it seems too convenient that Violet and Sir and almost Olaf all happened to use it and only then. I feel like it was used in TMM as just another vocabulary word to teach. Really random.

Catherine O'Hara was fine as Justice Strauss in the film, but she's *much* better suited for a role like Dr. Orwell. I would be curious to know though if it was ever considered for her to reprise her role as Justice Strauss - if it's the case, I'm glad she got Orwell instead.

edressa I fully agree. Can I take the opportunity and ask what you thought of her death as portrayed on the show? You probably read about her surviving in your French version, and after she tragically died in the original version. It would be interesting to see your point of view in the adaptation.

You probably read about her surviving in your French version, and after she tragically died in the original version. It would be interesting to see your point of view in the adaptation. I may misunderstand, but I'm pretty sure she still died in the French version - although it's been a while since I read the books in French and my most recent reading of the series was in English. I will say though that I read the Quebec version of the French translation and I've been told it was different from the one published in France (V.F.D., for one, is called V.F.C. in France but S.N.P.V. in Quebec). To come back to Dr. Orwell, I thought her death in the show was a little too quick and kind of contrived - I understand why they had her die in a fire instead of the saw, but she just... trips into the furnace? Okay. Although I've seen worse in the show (*cough cough* Jaquelyn and Larry trying (emphasis on trying) to catch Olaf *cough*) and I can't say the over-the-top-ness of Orwell's demise comes off as too jarring.

The Miserable Mill: VFX Before and After [From Tippett Studio, CVD VFX, and Crater Studios]

Excerpts from the Miserable Mill Section of The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations BO WELCH (Director of “The Miserable Mill”): It was the last episode of the season, and we had to go off the lot for it. “The Wide Window” left us with no more stage space, so it forced us to shoot the mill at a real location, an old dock building which we then tried to make look like a stage. It all worked out fine, except we look back and laugh at when the kids are walking in the woods and they’re real woods. It sticks out like a sore thumb for me and for Barry. We learned to never go outside. Our fake forests feel more like the show than the real ones. (From Season 1's Art Director Dan Hermansen)
DEAN GOODINE (Prop Master): The lumbermill was an amazing set that the special effects guys and set decorators deserve full marks for, with all the machinery they built and the stamping machine. All of that machinery had to actually work. What those guys pulled off with no time in a twenty- four-day window was nothing short of miraculous, and it was really an amazing set to walk into. (From Season 1's Art Director Dan Hermansen)
RHYS DARBY (Charles): I was overwhelmed, I had never worked on such a big set, it felt like a big James Bond movie or something. It made us all a bit more playful. I think your acting has to feel equal to your surroundings. Sometimes comic actors can be guilty of being a bit silly or unreal, but in that world it fit perfectly to go a bit over the top. (From Season 1's Art Director Dan Hermansen)
BO WELCH: I got to direct my wife [Catherine O’Hara]. It was the first time we had worked together since Beetlejuice. It was very fun and fascinating. When she becomes that character, it’s no longer your wife. It absolutely stunned me and it made me realize how good she is. I didn’t really appreciate that as much as I do now, having been on the other side of the camera watching her. It’s mind-blowing. (From Season 1's Art Director Dan Hermansen)

The introductory scene of these episodes is very funny. From Mr. Poe desperate and soon calming down with a free snack to the forest scene it was a lot of fun to watch. And the arrival to the village P. was interesting to watch. The village itself, as it stands, seems to tell us a story.
I loved Klaus and Violet's dialogue: are we invading? and Violet replies: "we are children" and Klaus: "They are not multiquely exclusive".
Now, I wonder, would it be better if we didn't see Sir's face? It didn't really bother me. But were there any problems portraying him smoking at a children's show? I don't think so, because he's a villain.
I thought it was really cool Klaus complaining about the script. "it always happens when we are about to hear an answer!" Is that what they call "spotlight"? It worked for me. It's like the screenwriter telling us, "Look, I know this is absurd, but I need to leave it at that. I'm not underestimating your intelligence."
Nice to know that Bertrand did not trust optimists and ophthalmologists well. This reinforces my headcanon that many ophthalmologists in the ASOUE universe are hypnotists, and that they make VFD disguises more convincing by hypnotic suggestion. That is why a specific costume kit must always be used.
Reviewing Dr. Orwell, I feel sorry that she died so soon ... She was a great character played by a great actress who was very well directed. It is great to see these villainous female characters in a pre-Esmé time.
I keep thinking that if Klaus were the oldest, several situations would be different. They would have left just as he wanted, which seems to be the most sensible decision. I think it was necessary to put Violet's plot wanting to clear the parents' names so that there was a reason for them to remain there despite the cruelty they were going through. I remember how happy that red haring made me when I saw him.The brief fight scene with Mrs. Quagmire was fun. I have no negative reviews yet. The hypnosis scene was interesting and distressing.

Now thinking which actor/actress played the Quagmire mansion arsonist? It was probably one of the background actors who worked on the show, or a stand in.

I barely even recall motion. They could practically have used a mannequin (though that would have been too awkward).

Speaking of which, it was good that they kept the mystery about who caused that fire. Apparently there was still a determination to keep the mysterious things in the books a mystery in the series.

I heard your Georgina theory, and I quite agree. I didn’t do it, that’s for sure.

Agree, you didn't care about the Quagmires neither in the book/series. The only thing I'm suspicious of you is that you wanted the Penthouse (marry Jerome) to get back your SB through the tunnel, but forgot about it because of IN things. (possibly) On the other side be it one of the Sinister duo would also make sense even though they do everything together. They imprisoned the Quagmires in the first place, but why to not imprison them again or not burning their house down in the first place?
