A random AU that popped into my head, in which the characters of ASOUE are all dead (ghosts).
The Baudelaire Children (Klaus, Violet and Sunny), died in the fire that destroyed their home. However they don't know that their dead at first and are stuck in limbo on Earth for some reason. In the TBB, they're on the Briny Beach during a foggy grey day waiting for their parents to arrive. A shadowy dark figure approaches them through the fog.
Mr Poe, a ghost who died from tuberculosis informs that their parents have died in a fire (but does not tell them that they're dead, because they have to find out for themselves).
He drops hints here and there, though they don't pick it up at first. Poe puts them in care of Count Olaf, a ghost that claims the Baudelaire children's parents poisoned him to obtain his fortune.
Olaf terrorises them for this and can use his ghostly powers to shape-shift into anyone to fool other ghosts.
Justice Strauss is an elderly ghost that died of old age alone without any children. She serves as judgement for people's souls to whether they can go to Heaven or Hell.
Eventually as the series progresses the Baudelaires soon come to notice things. Other people ignoring them, the constant grey gloomy weather, a mysterious man disappearing and newspapers stating that all the Baudelaires died in the fire. What hit's the nail in the coffin, is seeing their own tombstones in the cemetery.
(That's all I got plot wise so far).
