I am a big fan of Melanie Martinez, and I know that her fandom overlaps quite a bit with the ASOUE fandom, and so I was wondering if there are any other fans on this site.

Yes! I discovered her just after the Dollhouse EP came out in around 2014, and saw her live in 2016 when she was in my country.

Wow! You saw her live!? Tell me all about it! I’m actually a new fan (post-K-12), and I started listening to her music while bored in lockdown. What do you think of the K-12 movie by the way?

I loooove the visual world, from the costumes to the hair and everything I admire her so much. I really like all of the individual videos but the story-line itself in K-12 is a bit muddled because of budget cuts which stopped a lot of her ideas. Many of the songs were written before the film so it was like putting a puzzle piece together with no picture. For her next albums he's planned the theme and film prior, so I think it will be much better. Apparently it's circus themed, she has alluded to it a few times. Her next EP is coming out September 21--25th I think with a bunch of videos which should be cool, even tho it doesn't link to the album it will be cool to have new material. She cut her hair really weirdly though, so the look of the EP will be really different if she doesn't wear wigs like most of her videos.

The EP is amazing, but the music video for ‘The Bakery’ terrified me. I mean, even Melanie’s shoes were scary, and don’t get me started on her dancing, or the song itself. There’s going to be a music video for ‘Test Me’, which I doubt will be as frightening. I can kind of imagine it taking place in a huge and beautiful old library.

I do not know this singer, but for some reason in my country there are many ASoUE fans who share an interest in Melanie Martinez. A YouTuber that I follow published content about ASOUE and about her.

There is a lot of overlap in the fandoms, yes.

What is your favourite/least favourite on the EP? I love Field Trip. Glued is my least favourite, I really liked the verses but the chorus and pace was very underwhelming to me.

The chorus of Glued was beautiful, what are you talking about?! My favourite is Test Me, my least favourite is Notebook.

Also, have you heard any of her new unreleased songs which have been leaked? My favourite is zzzz. There are lots of interpretations of the song, with some saying it’s about murder and others saying it’s about suicide. My opinion is that it is about someone who has gone through a traumatic experience, and a former friend offers to help but is actually plotting to kill him/her.

I think Bombs on Monday or WDBCF are my favourites, but a lot of the CB outtakes are my favourites in general. There are 30-60 songs written for each album cycle by her, but she mostly worked with Mikey (forgot last name but they used to date) as the producer on K-12 - which is why there were no leaks (apart from Drama Club but that ended up getting released). A lot of other forums (altboards, diamondgarden - both gone I think), were really excited when Band-aid leaked in full and I remember all the hype. There's one about pop-ier music but I can't quite remember the name, where there are a lot of Mel fans too. I'll try and figure it out so I can link you Forums are kind of outddated for younger fans like you and I, but there's a large community on instagram and twitter.

What’s your interpretation of zzz?

I think it's probably just a milk and cookies concept, this was seen a lot in the CB era, which are why there are so many demos. The clear difference between the Dollhouse EP and her debut was a looot of experimentation. This is most notably seen in the original demo of crybaby, which had a lot more toy-sounds which the album was originally influenced by, but toned down later on. If you type up crybaby live 2014 I think you can hear the difference to the studio version (alike this remake www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q33t86-ISY). I do like the beetlejuice reference in ZZZ however! I think it hasn't been leaked fully because it wasn't a fully developed song. A very very boring interpretation, I know but it's the most plausible to me.
