This is a story I came up with a while ago but decided to start writing down in time for Halloween. It is a crossover AU with Coraline, set during TEE. I will be publishing it in parts in the days leading up to and after Halloween.
Trembling with fear, the Baudelaires climbed the rope down the elevator shaft. It seemed like they had been climbing through the darkness for hours or even days, but that didn’t make it any less terrifying. ‘Endshaft?’ Sunny asked her siblings, which meant something along the lines of ‘Are we nearly there?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Violet replied. ‘I’m scared I’ll lose my footing if I look down, and besides, it’s too dark to see.’ Without another word, they continued their perilous journey. Or they would have, if the rope hadn’t snapped. Hundreds of yards of neckties, curtain pulls and other bits and pieces came tumbling down into the shaft, and Violet could only look on in horror as her siblings fell with it. This was the end. Her invention had failed, Klaus and Sunny were gone, and she was hanging on to a ridge in the brickwork for dear life. She opened her mouth to scream, but her fingers slipped and she too vanished into the dark.

But although it seemed that all hope was lost, I can tell you that none of the Baudelaires died. As they fell, the darkness was soon expelled by flashes of light and colour, and as the elevator shaft was illuminated by this mysterious glow, the Baudelaires’ fall slowed. After a minute or so, they were hardly falling at all and instead were sort of floating towards the ground. Looking around him, Klaus was immediately reminded of a book he had read long ago, about a girl who falls down an extraordinarily deep hole and ends up in another world. The book was called Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, and although he was falling down an elevator shaft and not a rabbit hole, and would probably end up landing painfully at the bottom rather than in another world, he still couldn’t help feeling like Alice as he continued his seemingly endless fall. After what seemed like days, Violet, Klaus and Sunny landed gracefully on the ground. Or they thought they had. They seemed to be once again standing in the corridor on the top floor of 667 Dark Avenue. It was prettier than they remembered: the elevator doors were shinier, the walls were cleaner, and the carpet was softer and seemed to sink under their feet. Baffled, the Baudelaires decided that the only thing they could do was return to the penthouse with Jerome, who was standing nearby. ‘Jerome?’ Violet called, ‘It’s us!’ ‘Welcome home, Baudelaires!’ He said, and turned round. But as he did so, the orphans could see that this was not Jerome. For where Jerome had sad and weary brown eyes that made him look like he had given up on life entirely, this man had a pair of shiny black buttons.

The Baudelaires stared for a while in confusion and horror, until Klaus finally got up the courage to speak. ’Where are we?’ He asked. ’Home, of course,’ replied the strange man (if he could even be called that). ‘You just need to change out of those ridiculous suits before Esmé sees.’ ‘Rayedehors?’ Sunny retorted sarcastically, which meant ‘I guess pinstripe suits are out now?’ ’No, they’re in. That’s why you can’t be wearing them. Esmé thinks that fashions are used to control people, and refuses to follow any of them. Here, you have no choice but to wear whatever you want.’ By now, the children could take no more. ‘What is going on?’ Violet demanded. ‘What is this place, how did we get here, and why do you have buttons instead of eyes?’ ‘You’re the scientist, you should know about all the theories of other worlds. Well, they’re true. And as for how you got here, I expect it was via the passage in the elevator shaft. And I have the buttons for the same reason you have eyes; to see. Now, come with me and I’ll show you around.’ He turned and started walking confidently towards a grand door that the children recognised as leading to the penthouse. Reluctant but curious, the Baudelaire orphans followed him down the corridor and towards the unknown.

He opened the door to the penthouse, and inside the children could see a huge, beautifully decorated living room lined with shelves and shelves of leather-bound books. Five sofas were arranged around a wooden coffee table that to the Baudelaires’ amazement seemed to still be alive and covered in leaves and flowers. Sitting elegantly on one of the sofas was a tall, beautiful woman who they could tell at once was Esmé Squalor, or some version of her at least; she was dressed normally for a start, her smile was warm and genuine, and instead of Esmé’s piercing emerald green eyes she had the same black buttons. ‘What on earth happened to you, Baudelaires?’ she asked. ‘You look terrible!’ She beckoned them over and they reluctantly sat down, wondering how much stranger this was going to get. ‘Tell me everything!’ ‘Well,’ Violet began, ‘it all started when we lost our parents in a terrible fire. We were sent to live with a despicable man named Count Olaf who forced us to work tirelessly day and night, and he- he-‘ The memory was almost too much for Violet to bear, but she wasn’t going to let her sadness get the better of her. Klaus, noticing this, stepped in. ‘He tried to force Violet to marry him so he could get our parents’ fortune, but Violet signed the marriage certificate with the wrong hand and got us out just in time. We were taken to the home of our Uncle Monty, but Count Olaf showed up again and murdered him. It went on like this for a long time, travelling from guardian to guardian not knowing if we would ever find a safe home. ‘VFD’, Sunny finished. Klaus was about to explain what she meant but the Other Esmé simply nodded knowingly, and the children could tell that she understood. ‘Count Olaf?’ she asked in a shocked tone. ‘Count Olaf has been dead for a long, long time. He probably died before you were even born. You’re safe here now. Would you like to see your rooms?’ Despite her fear, Violet couldn’t help but smile. This world actually seemed quite nice. The Other Esmé stood up, and taking Violet’s hand led the Baudelaires down a long corridor lined with ornate wall lamps. After what seemed like forever she stopped at a large door in which was set a white ceramic plaque: To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk~ Thomas Alva Edison. Gingerly, Violet pushed open the door and gasped. A metal-framed bed sat amidst shelves containing books by and about the likes of Ada Lovelace and Amelia Earhart, and on one side of the room tools of every kind imaginable lined a blank wall. An impossibly vast window on the third wall looked out on an elegant tree-lined street, and on the fourth a large walk-in wardrobe contained clothes of every kind imaginable and a whole drawer of hair ribbons in every colour she had ever seen with the exception, of course, of pink. Everywhere she looked were strange and intriguing devices; everything from the lock on her door to the bedside lamp was unlike anything she had ever seen before.

Leaving Violet to explore, Klaus, Sunny and the Other Esmé carried on through the hallway to a smaller, beautifully carved wooden door. Klaus eagerly looked inside, and tall, majestic bookshelves lined with every book he had ever loved gazed back at him. The windows were large and rounded, and under each one was a cushioned windowsill just like the ones he had in his room when his parents were still alive. A comfortable-looking wood-framed bed sat in a corner, surrounded by an embroidered canopy so as to block out the light when he was trying to sleep. Amidst the bookshelves, numerous armchairs were positioned in a semicircle, just perfect for sitting and discussing the books which waited expectantly on the shelves for their stories to be set free. He reached for a leather-bound edition of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, only for the shelf to swing open like a door revealing a narrow corridor behind it. ‘That leads to the library,’ he heard the Other Esmé say. ‘I’ll show you later.’ Klaus, not wanting to cause trouble, just about kept himself from going to explore. By now only Sunny hadn’t seen her bedroom, but that changed soon enough. The door to her room appeared to be made out of nothing more than a translucent mist which immediately disintegrated when she approached. Inside it was painted in baby blue and lilac, with a domed ceiling topped with a magnificent skylight through which she could see the sun beginning to set. The room seemed surprisingly empty, but just as she was wondering where she was going to sleep, a cot decorated with a shimmering mobile which seemed to change every time she looked at it simply floated down from the sky. From somewhere, strange, ethereal music was playing. ‘Okay Baudelaires,’ the voice of the Other Jerome called from outside. ‘Get changed and meet me in the library. There’s someone who wants to see you.’
