I ask Greg if the woman looked familiar. She could be someone famous. Also, did she have green eyes? Greg - Oh, I don't remember... If she's famous, I've never seen her before. And I don't remember the color of her eyes. But it is certainly the woman in this photo.

I return to the body to get a good look at her eyes.

Roxy222 returned to the desert with some members of the group. She put on her glasses and gloves, and carefully opened the victim's eyes. They were visibly dry.
Roxy222 - Dark gray eyes.
Paterson - Do you or anyone else have any theory that you would like to share with others?... Soon I will need to arrange for the body to be taken to the legal medical institute. But my fellow police officers took many photographs, from all angles, and these can be consulted if necessary. Probably autopsy will reveal more details. But it would be great if you could show that you were able to deduce the cause of death before autopsy. This way it could more easily justify the presence of so many consultants to investigate this death.

Dehydration should be investigated as a possibility. In that light, it would be worth checking with Greg exactly how long ago he remembers seeing the victim. And whether he has any kind of CCTV system which might have recorded footage of the victim and the other two people in the dune buggy.

The detective team correctly guessed deduced the cause of death. The victim died of dehydration.

Paterson took all the detectives to a private room at the police station.
Paterson - Very good detectives. Thank you very much for the help you are giving to this case. And thanks also to Munnin for joining us. It would be very good if VFD had always been a secret organization with a high level of organization, and there were always records of all its active members and their activities and locations. We all know that several attempts have been made in this direction and our headquarters in the mountains are the best example of this. But there are still many volunteers lost in this huge world. The schism must have made them very confused ... And there are still rumors that some of the neophytes have created their own versions of our organization. The schism gets worse every year ... So, I would like to know if you have any information that is off the record that could be useful to identify the victim or discover those responsible for her death ... It is difficult to determine even whether that was a murder or an unfortunate misfortune. Have any of you ever heard of any Mallahan family that was involved with VFD in any way? After all, the victim wrote that name several times on her own body. We can say that someone from the Mallahan family is a person of interest in this case.

I tell Paterson what I know about Mrs. Mallahan and Mr. Mallahan.

I step out of the shadows, revealing myself as a detective that has been with them the whole time, silently observing everything.
To Paterson: "Didn't the daughter, Moxie Mallahan, have some kind of entanglement with a young VFD member when she was living in Stain'd-by-the-Sea? Something about a missing statue?"

The group shared the information with Patterson. He excused himself for a few days from the police station to take care of a private matter. In fact, Paterson and all the detectives traveled by train to Stain'd By The Sea to investigate. That town was very different from the descriptions cited by detectives to Paterson. It was a crowded and very busy city. And nobody seemed to be wearing masks. But there were similarities: statues of a strange sea beast were scattered everywhere. Paterson concluded that during the 12 years that had passed since Snicket left, the invisible paint production company really helped Stain'd By The Sea to thrive again and get new investments.
Paterson - So, where do we start?

Ask if Ellington Feint has been seen in the area since her arrest.

Paterson -It sounds like an interesting idea. But what is your plan, ask the first person to pass on the street?

Just ask around in the shops and things and see if we find out anything interesting.

Interview local shopkeeps, hoteliers, newspaper reporters, and other service employees who regularly see many of the town's citizens, and ask them if they recognise a person of the woman's description (if we have a photo of her corpse which doesn't look too obviously disturbing, that would help, too). Also ask if any notable citizens of the town matching the woman's description have been known to leave for the Hinterlands recently.
