I seem to have wandered out of the forum during a lot of PfB talk.....could anyone recap the "publisher not liking the book" story? I'm fascinated by the real world backstory of books. Also, I work at a bookstore, I can see if I can dig anything up re: concrete info next time I'm in. Much appreciated. Here's what we've heard about publisher discontent with Poison For Breakfast, essentially straight from the horse's mouth: I've been mulling over sharing this for a while, but think it should be alright. I met Daniel Handler back in November at a bookshop in London last year. Long story short, me and a group of friends got to ask him - 'Would you ever consider writing an adult novel set in the Snicket universe?' While I can't remember word for word his answer, he sighed a little and said that while he wasn't sure about an adult novel necessarily, he found the question interesting because he and his publisher were having conversations back and forth about the newest Snicket book he had just written. He said that his publisher thought the novel was too adult for his younger audience, and that it was causing 'issues'. Handler himself has since described the book's delay as being " for various boring reasons". (This was the same occasion where he told us it would finally be out this summer.)

Oh awesome I do remember that now but didn't know if there was more ~~~~drama. Thank you!
I also think it's interesting that the publisher is still focused on the children's market for new Snicket books cuz, let's be honest, Snicket isn't gaining LEGIONS of new 10 year old fans. Certainly people are newly reading it and discovering it. I'm not discounting that. I sell it all the time at the bookstore I work at. But the core audience is those of us who stared reading back in 1999 and are now....yikes.....30. So his audience like isn't JUST kids anymore. So that's who *I* would imagine they'd focus on.

Update: there is no info in the internal B&N computers (that we can access as salespeople, anyway) that even MENTIONS PfB. I'm hoping it's this year but there's no way to know.

I hope there will be a "poisson for breakfast" pun in the book somewhere.
if not, I'll be returning it.

I imagine that either the publisher is going to dump it with very little publicity, or they've pushed it back again slightly while they're working on some kind of promotional tour.

It may be worth noting that I've tracked down Norton and Liveright's publishing catalogs for the summer and Poison for Breakfast is nowhere to be seen in it - but it is down as a very late summer book, and there hasn't even been any formal announcement of it yet. I continue to keep an eye on the situation. Thank you for your research, ryantrimble457.
