Hello everyone! I've been on 667 for quite some time, but stayed in the shadows and disappeared for a while. I'm now back and would like to get more involved - especially because I've been navigating through the website quite a lot recently and I'd feel guilty if I didn't contribute! I'm a French fan of Lemony Snicket's work, and I wrote my Master's thesis on the ASOUE books (focusing on the theme of repetition) - it allowed me to graduate, and I've now started my PhD on the Baudelaires. I've decided to work on displacement, movement and power in the books - extending it to the field of children's literature (and I unfortunately won't go into too much detail, otherwise my supervisor will kill me ). I've never been too good at participating in discussions and such, but I'm willing to be more active and to discuss the books more than before (I guess that's progress!). Thank you for everything you're doing in this community, I always love coming here Kisses to all of you! Hope you're all fine in those dark times! xx

I mean, I recently wrote a text that I'm very proud of why Daniel Handler doesn't reveal some secrets of asoue ... I would love to know if you agree with me. (Please disregard my mistakes in English ...) asoue.proboards.com/thread/36645/asoue-effect-whyAnd I would love to hear a little more about your research. You don't need to go into details, but is there any place where we can at least read the summary?

Welcome! You must be an expert on repetition in ASOUE. I look forward to reading your thoughts. And congratulations on the decision to start the PhD!

Wtf? You are doing a PhD on the series? Wow! Anyway, welcome back! Hi! Yes, I managed to convince my supervisor that the books NEED to be studied, and I even got a scholarship to work on this project so I'm really hyped It's just difficult to organise everything in an academic way, and there is still so so much I have to read and think about... I've just started after all

Welcome! You must be an expert on repetition in ASOUE. I look forward to reading your thoughts. And congratulations on the decision to start the PhD! Hello! I wouldn't say that I'm an expert (I would have a hard time claiming that!) but I did look into the theme almost exclusively for about 8 months, so I managed to write 200 pages about it (although my last chapter is a long stretch with Freud and other philosophers, as my Master's thesis had to revolve around some common themes with my class in order for me to graduate). Repetition is so anchored and pervasive throughout the books, it's difficult not to talk about it when analysing the series! The most interesting part, however, was talking about intertextuality and intermediality, and the links between text and image, which I couldn't talk about too much. Fortunately, as I will be talking about the Netflix series during my PhD (that was one of my supervisor's conditions to convince the board to get a scholarship), I'll get to do that a lot more. I'm no expert when it comes to analysing images and films, I've got a lot of work! Thanks for the warm welcome

I haven't written much yet, as I've just started in September. However, I'll be presenting my project in a conference this summer, so perhaps I could send you the abstract? I'd rather do it by message for now if that's fine by you

Oh, hello burgundyrain! I’ve seen a few of your posts around the board — it’s nice to finally make your acquaintance. This thesis you’re doing on Snicket’s work sounds truly fascinating. It never fails to astonish me that there is so much to discuss in a series of books most definitely aimed at children. (I think it secretly makes DH very happy to see people picking his work apart well into adulthood, even if he acts as if he thinks it’s silly.)

(I think it secretly makes DH very happy to see people picking his work apart well into adulthood, even if he acts as if he thinks it’s silly.) Hi ! Thank you for the kind words The series is indeed mostly aimed at children, but depending on your point of view and the way you question the books, I can definitely say it's part of crossover literature- and that is why so many adults still enjoy it now. It's not just because of the nostalgia, but because there are things that can't be understood by the primary readers (children), or at least not at first, and because it is still stimulating, regardless of our age Handler himself wrote to me in a short interview 4y ago that he thought it pointless to have books aimed only at children or only at adults, and that the best ones are those that can attract both sides depending on the level of understanding of the story. Choosing this subject was very difficult - there are so many things I wanted to discuss, and I felt so lucky getting the opportunity of working on the ASOUE books that I wanted something rather encompassing. I was also thinking about male/female relationships, but it was too narrow a subject, so I'll focus on movement, alienation, identity and power (in the 13 books, the Netflix series and I'll try to talk a bit about the ATWQ as well). It's a big project, I'm not going to lie, but I'm thrilled! I also think he's pleased that his books are studied, not so much because people are going so far to analyse and understand them, but perhaps because some people are eager to fully jump into this universe he has created, even as adults. At least, I hope so

As a child, I am personally offended at the concept that there are parts of ASOUE I can’t understand.

As a child, I am personally offended at the concept that there are parts of ASOUE I can’t understand. Ohh I perhaps phrased it wrong - parts that some children may not understand I'm sure you know a lot more than me about the books anyway (I was for example taking the example of "Beatrice", who wouldn't necessarily remind a child reader of Dante's Beatrice, who is a very convenient possible interpretation for her name)

In fact, I believe that a child may not understand some literary references, not because he has an intellectual capacity incapable of understanding such references, but simply because his life span was short enough to capture all references in a casual reading. In fact, this phenomenon can occur even with adults, since some literary references are not understood by adults who did not read or did not know about the works that were cited. I myself only got to know some references very recently.
But it is expected that, as you get older, the chances of yourself not realizing it will acquire knowledge of literature, probably when someone as an adult reread asoue, the number of references understood will be greater than when he read it as a child.
More than that. The way asoue affects a child can really be different from the way asoue affects an adult. I can exemplify: when I read asoue when I was a teenager, I felt much more represented by the Baudelaires. Currently, I feel much more represented by Lemony Snicket himself.
