My name is Jay. I grew up reading and rereading Lemony Snicket's stories about the Baudealires. I have all the books in Portuguese and English in my room. I've watched Asoue's film countless times, but the Netflix series I thought was good except for the third season.
If you are reading this it is because I died or because I lost this notebook. I seriously hope it is the second option. I want to make it very clear, right from the start, that I found out that VFD is real. Of course, things in VFD are not exactly as Daniel Handler wrote. But definitely, VFD is real. And I will prove it, or I will die trying.

Today I managed to take another step to prove that VFD is real. I managed to convince Jean to help me. It was difficult to find his home, but he left some very obvious clues on that forum.
Male, black, married, lives in Brazil... Knowing a little about his literary tastes and IP address... In the end it was not difficult... I was exaggerating when I said it was difficult.
It was difficult to convince him to help me. He thought about calling the police, but after I explained my purpose, he was sure that calling the police was better.
I had to bribe some policemen, and I realized that I needed to clearly explain to Jean how willing I was to prove that VFD was real. I sent emails offering him a million reais for him to quit his job and he started helping me. He did not reply to my email. I then called him. He didn't take my calls. So, I was forced to visit him again. But this time he heard me without calling the police.
- VFD is not real, Mr. Jay. - He told me.
- I offer you 4 million reais, for you to help me. You seem to know a lot about VFD. I would prefer to call Dante to help me, but you live much closer.
- But I can not. I have health insurance at my job, for me and for my family. Furthermore, the most important thing is that VFD doesn't really exist ... This is just an invention by Daniel Handler.
- That's what they want you to think, Jean. Let's do the following: I will pay your health insurance for the rest of your life. And your wife's health plan too. In addition, if you help me, I will pay you 5 million reais, even if we do not prove that VFD is real. But if we prove it, I will pay you 10 million dollars.
He said he would think about it and talk to his wife. I left my card with him. In the evening he called me, and made several legal demands, such as signing his work card, and creating a formal contract. I sent two of my lawyers to take care of that. I hope they can find some registry office open at 9:30 pm to make the contract official. Otherwise, I will need to bribe some more people. I am too anxious to begin our work.
Daddy is going to need to swallow what he said.

Today was the first time that Jean came to my house. I took him to the room I like to call the Secret Base.
He seemed a little uncomfortable with the size of the house or the number of employees, or the number of cars, or the size of the pools, or the size of the chandeliers, or the sizes of the tables, or something involving the carpets , or the frames. Or else it was the fact that they searched him several times at each of the gates until he got here.
He didn't want to tell me, but I could tell it in his eyes. I am a very sensitive person for that kind of thing.
But when he entered the Secret Base he was overjoyed. He looked at all the pictures on the walls, he looked at all the books in the library ...
- This books...
- Yes, these are all the books quoted in all of the asoue, ATWQ and outhers books by Lemony Snicket or Daniel Handler. - I said proudly - I have the digital version of each one too. I had a word and subject search app created in each of them.
Jean then went to the wall of woolen cords and pins. There was all the evidence that I had collected in the past few years involving VFD. There were reports of fires, political scandals, strange behavior on the part of animals, stolen fortunes and caves used as housing.
- Mr. Jay ... What do you hope to achieve with this? As I said, VFD does not exist. But even if I'm wrong, what will you gain from proving that VFD exists? I mean ... If they exist, there must be some reason for them to stay hidden. And if they exist ... Maybe they are dangerous.
- Jean, I'm paying you to help me and not to find out my reasons. And you already accepted. If I'm not mistaken, you work for me now, and will continue to do so for the next two years.
That answer had been rehearsed with my lawyers. In my agreement with Jean, I divided the 5 million reais in salaries for the next 2 years.
- Okay. Let's do this. Show me what convinced you so much that VFD is real.- Jean said.

I showed Jean my book from The Beatrice Letters.
Evidently it was all cut out.
- Do you see the signature? My father bought this book in the hands of Daniel Handler himself, during the autograph night. This was one of my father's treasures, but I ended up tearing it up when I was 4 years old. I tore the first letter. My father was very angry with me. But it was then that he saw that there was a message written on the back of the first letter. He found it interesting, but he thinks it's just an easter egg.
- This is probably really an Easter egg for those who bought a copy that day. - Jean said.
- Have you read what is written there-

Behind the letter LS to BB # 1 there was only one message:
"Behind the black there will be a track"
"I feel a little offended" - Jean said.
"Daniel Handler is not that racist at all. This could only be a clue to whoever received that book specifically." - I answered.
"You can't be sure that Daniel Handler wrote this. Unless we hire a handwriting expert and compare it to something he wrote by hand." - Jean said.
"Well, you can provide this. But most importantly, I realized that he was referring to the black pages of TBL. Because it would not be possible to perceive messages written there, even against the light. I removed photographs that had been pasted on black pages. And I was right. "
I showed Jean each of the photos. On the back were several code messages.
"These are Vigenère's ciphers." - Jean said.
"Yes. I thought you would recognize that easily. I read what you wrote in Matt Litory and The Multiple Intelligences." - I said. "But it takes a key to be able to find out the meaning of this. I've tried several, and never managed. I've tried the names of several characters, the names of several books, the names of Daniel Handler's relatives and friends, and several other names related to every literary work. I tried dates linked to Daniel Handler and his family. But nothing seems to work. "
Jean was thoughtful. He seemed to be starting to believe. And then he smiled.
"Let me see the cover of this copy of TBL". I gave him that file.
Jean said: "Note, there are two decorative details right at the top next to the name 'Letters'. This detail is black. Could it be that the key is behind this?"
I quickly grabbed my stylus and carefully removed what Jean had said. On both sides there was a sequence of identical letters:
KTCHAELB
It was then that I realized that all the investment I had made to hire Jean was really worth it.
"Did you notice that?" - Jean pointed to the back of the cover.
I had noticed. But it was cool to let him figure it out on his own. There was a pen-written check on the item "Entirely Witten In Code".

I am loving it! VFD existing is my greatest fear and uncovering it is my greatest wish, so I am seeing this as a wonderful horror story.

I had already typed the message of the first secret letter, which was behind the photo of the leech in an "S" shape. Then, we resort to one of the available sites to perform the decryption. Everything was very fast, and we found the following message:
"I need to confess my sins over the years. I'm going crazy for being forced to keep that secret. I, along with four other volunteer firefighters, were responsible for the kidnapping of Lisa Carter in 1997, and because of that the multi-ethnic party managed to exist in Guyana. Darren Woods received the right tips for finding black ink in the middle of the ocean. We thought it would benefit everyone. But we never imagined that the little girl would die. I wasn't there the day she tried to escape and ended up drowning. But I know that it's my fault too. And at the end of the day, I don't know if it was all worth it."

Behind the photograph of the pin was the following message (after decoding):
"I also need to confess my sin involving Zaire in 1996. I know that something needed to be done after the great fire in Rwanda in 1994. The schism between Hutus and Tutsis was the greatest tragedy that we were unable to avoid. I thought I could do something about it to avoid something similar or worse in the neighbor. I always dreamed of being able to bring a quiet place in Zaire, but I ended up leading to two wars ... and Bobi shouldn't have died, she was only 17 and she didn't know that she had married a cruel and genocidal dictator. And at the end of the day, the new guardian proved to be just another villain in disguise."

Behind the photograph of Beatrice's hair was written:
"I confess today my sins of omission, an expression that here means that I did not do what I should have done to prevent the Srebrenica fire in July 1995. I should have warned my former guardian about the true power of Serbian scorpions. More than 8,000 men died during that fire, and I am not able to write here what those scorpions did to women. I know that when in Bosnia the schism had started long before. But I know that fires can be managed to prevent major disasters. I didn't care enough ..."

We decode the message behind the picture of the metal tool in the shape of the letter T, as follows:
"My training in British Isles was very troubled, and I may not have learned how to properly prevent or fight fires. Still, my tutor was very good. In February 1991, right at the beginning of my training, even though we were not preventing the fire from a bomb in the prime minister's office, we were able to prevent deaths. But we did not have the same success in the two years that followed.
We were unable to prevent the financial district explosion in 1992, when three people died, not even in March 1993, in Warrington, when 15 people died, including two children from one of my teachers.
The following month, my tutor Ed Henty, who was disguised as an investigative photographer, passed away when he guaranteed the evacuation of the financial district that was the target of another bomb. I will never forget that day: He and I cracked a secret code involving a dark blue car parked suspiciously near a religious temple. And at the end of the day, he was a hero who gave his life to save other people. And I was hurriedly without a tutor. Perhaps, if I had been properly trained, I would not have had so many regrets today."

Jean got up and went to the bathroom. He seemed to need to compose himself. He came back with a wet face.
- So, you are sure that this is not someone playing a trick on you ... Someone from your family for example.
- I am sure.
- Not even your father, who gave you the book?
- Let's not talk about my father. But yes, I'm sure this is not my father's joke. He's not the type to spend his time doing this.
- But what does he say about it? Can I know? It seems to be an important key to the mystery, because that book was delivered specifically to him.
- He says this is all nonsense. And that he shouldn't have gone there to buy it.
- Was he interested in ASOUE in the past?
- Yes ... But not that he was as interested as I am.
- I would like to meet your father ... I think he may have the answers to some important questions.
- I haven't seen my father in 2 years. He doesn't answer my calls, he doesn't answer my emails. I don't know where he is, or if he's alive. But if he is alive ... - I decided not to complete the sentence. - But I didn't hire you to investigate my father. I hired you to help me prove that VFD is real. These writings are a good find, but they do not serve as proof.
- You're right. Anyone with a fertile imagination could write a fanfic relating VFD to real events. But we will address the following strategy: we will not jump to conclusions, but at the same time we will face the possibility that these documents are true confessions of a member of a secret organization with strong similarities with VFD described in ASOUE. - Jean seemed to be talking to himself more than to me.
- You're starting to believe, aren't you? - I told him.
- Well ... Secret organizations have been around for a long time. One of them, perhaps it could have really inspired Daniel Handler to write about it ... But, what are you going to take as evidence? I mean ... If we find a secret organization behind the events described in these secret letters, even if it is not called VFD, will you be satisfied?
- I will only be satisfied with an organization that works according to the VFD model, even if it is not exactly called VFD.
- Okay, Jay ... Let's start by hiring a handwriting specialist. I'm going to research Daniel Handler's handwriting. But, I will be disappointed if the handwriting of these secret messages happens to be from Handler himself.
- Why would you be disappointed?
- Jay, note the content of the messages ... If the content is real, they are like bottles thrown into the sea by a shipwreck. If the content is real, the author's state of mind was to want a confession to a stranger. Daniel Handler would not do this on purpose in his own work. That would be a piscilogical contradiction. Our unknown author has not revealed his name. Although he did reveal some names ... This indicates shame in himself. But he is proud of his guardian, so he wanted someone to know the name of his guardian and the reason he died. That name will still lead us to good research. But first, let's look at the handwriting.
- It's good to have you on my team of two.

Jean! I am so relieved to see that you are still alive!
(Sorry for silence, have been very busy lately and also not feeling well: will try to actually comment on things soon.)
