So I work as a librarian, something I've commented on before on 667, though I cant recall going into in any massive detail before (this place can play tricks on you though). I thought I'd make a thread to just post random thoughts or experiences I have about libraries.
As part of my contract I work in several different libraries, (most of which have been closed for the last year due to covid), but this week one of our libraries reopened in a brand new building, which has been lovely. This has coincided with restrictions lifting to allow physical access to book browsing, and its been nice to see (literally) hundreds of people* coming in to use the library again.
Has anyone here worked in a library in any capacity, either past or present? If so feel free to share your experiences

Have you ever dealt with very valuable collections like those in the British Library? I refer to ancient manuscripts.

Valuable? I doubt it. We have some old records and stuff dating back to the 1700s but nothing too thrilling.

my mother has worked at the public library for about 20 years. she doesn't actually work in the library much though, because she's in the outreach department, and she is usually driving the bookmobile to schools and rural locations in the county.
i was a shelver there for a couple of summers, but i mostly hid in the back and read books instead of shelving them.
they don't limit the number of people in the library currently, but they've removed all the furniture so that you can't sit down or hang out anywhere.

I worked in a library when I was a teenager for a few months, back when I first joined 667. It was a good time.
I moved city 6 months ago and haven't been able to get a library membership since everywhere has been closed. So excited to go join one again.

I think Mr. M warned that some of his projects would be pending until after his wedding.

I am currently turning into angry library customer at how long its taken for a book I reserved to arrive (coincidentally, Bottle Grove, which I have not yet read). This was made up for by our Stock buyer assuring me that they had ordered plenty of copies of Poison for Breakfast.

I've been checking out books and reading since then. It's taking me ages to get through Kakfa on the Shore though

Isadora Is a Door, at work have you ever asked someone "well young lady, have you been good to your mother?"? No. I do get called 'young lady' a lot though. Maybe its the beard.

Would people be interested if I actually went into the highly technical minutae of library work/structuring?

Okay, so random example. Today I'm working entirely on my own (due to staff sickness) in the main library in the centre of town, so here are my random thoughts and detailings of what's going on.
- We do loads of stuff other than just books, as is evidenced by the number of bus pass applications i've submitted this morning. - There's a whole new shiny set of Unfortunate Events books arrived, which is nice. Most recently the Netflix editions have been purchased, but the original UK artwork adorns these versions, which I much prefer. Since they came in about a week ago books 1 and 10-12 have gone out on loan, which is interesting. - We also deal with birth and death registrations, and there have been a lot of calls about Tell Us Once (a system via which a deceased persons' running accounts are all automatically suspe nded) not working, which is true, but there's nothing that we can do about.... because it, well, isn't working - And now all the computers have gone down. This would be annoying if it didn't happen every week.

If you want to become a chartered librarian yes, but I am not one, and being a chartered librarian is pointless because I work with one and we're on the same pay scale / job level.
