Say what you will about how the actual film turned out, but the production design on it is BEYOND incredible. Absolutely agreed. It's absolutely incredible on a technical level. I personally don't mind the adaptation either.

The backgrounds in the movie are gorgeous, especially Lake Lachrymose.

I'll have to go back and re-watch the special features on my DVD, but I believe they said the backdrop for the Last Chance General Store is a 360 degree painting. Meaning they could basically turn the camera in any direction to film. Something like that today would be achieved with the Volume technology so it's crazy to see the old-school Hollywood effects used by the production crew.
