Hi, 667 needs new threads and we're trying to keep up engagement, so I'm Bee and I'm back with another non-related misc thread about my life I've been really struggling with my sleep this year, and I don't know why. Previously I never struggled to fall asleep or feel well-rested throughout school and University. This past year I've been having a hard time with waking up too early, and then not being able to fall back asleep, leading to me only getting 5-6 hours, which obviously isn't enough. I hate feeling sleep-deprived and always feel like I can't function/am not 100% myself. My question is, does anyone here take any sleep supplements, and if so what do you recommend? Looking at buying some kind of melatonin or something. Also if anyone here suffers from a similar problem, what helps you? How can we all get better sleep? I feel like I've just become switched on to how important it is this year. Thanks for reading this very unrelated/irrelevant post

I know the problem you're talking about, Bee, my mom often has the same, and I've experienced this on rare occasions, too. I don't know if I'd recommend sleep supplements unless it's a serious problem, because they can make you dependent and are obviously dangerous in higher dosages.
Myself I've had slight sleeping problems all my adult life, in that I often disrupt my sleep cycle by staying up too late. I can sleep it off, though, so it's not serious... just an annoying habit I have to constantly rectify (when to go to sleep and when to wake up).

I struggled massively with sleeping from about 2010 - 2013, and I kind of found that my problem was a combination of both sleeping too early and also sleeping to long. I generally sleep for only about 7 hours or so each night and have done since 2013, and I find that's enough for me...but I only found that out by listening to my body and seeing how much sleep i needed by trying differing amounts and seeing how it affected me. Less than 7 i was struggling to stay awake in the evening, more than 7 and i couldn't get to sleep the next day. As for what you're talking about... I think you might also be falling into a psychological trap of worrying about not sleeping properly stopping you from sleeping properly, which is a bastard to get out of.

I wake up too early because I need to pee pee then I can’t go back to sleep. I recommend reading or watching a movie, if you fall asleep great, if you don’t then at least you consumed some sweet sweet media.

I'm glad you're sleeping better now! And yeah totally. I have an appointment with someone about CBT for it Tuesday.

My sleep problems were related to misuse of my cell phone. Using the cell phone makes me sleepless. I decided to take the reins of my life again in many ways and my mental health and sleep improved a lot. But for that I needed to install a very powerful application blocker. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wverlaek.blockWhile it is active, it is impossible for you to deactivate it, especially if you block the settings part of your phone. You schedule times when your apps you use the most are inaccessible. (in addition to my secular job increase, this app is one of the reasons I decreased my attendance here...). Parallel to this, I increased my reading of physical books at night, including the Bible. And I bought a Kindle to read digital books. The slightest luminosity while reading helps me feel sleepy. I started drinking decaffeinated coffee instead of conventional coffee, and reduced the amount of carbohydrates I consume throughout the day.I still plan to start exercising... But I still haven't been able to do that often, because if I do it too late I also lose sleep.

I think sleep hygiene is very important, like not having caffeine at least 5 hours before you sleep, turning off all electronics one hour before, and not exposing yourself to bright lights yada yada but is less doable if you have salsae to do. I try to brush my teeth in the dark, and have a dim lamp on when i'm getting ready for bed.
The only thing swear by is,,, odd. Since 2019 I have been Pavlov-ing myself, with a sleep album. It doesn't really matter what, as long as you're consistent and it's not on shuffle. Now, every time I hear the first song, my brain shuts off and it's like white noise. Selected Ambient Works Vol II by Aphex Twin, or Deep Sleep Music Collective works a charm.

I used to be really bad at falling asleep and almost as bad at waking up. I'm sure it didn't help that until I was about 12 I was convinced you have to wait until your eyes shut automatically instead of closing them, but I think the main problem was that everything was just too early for me, my body just prefers to sleep and wake up later. When I went to secondary school I had to leave the house at 6:45 in the morning, so I had to wake up at 6 or even earlier. Now I start work at 9 and it takes me 10 minutes to get there (if I'm not working from home), so I could sleep until 8 if I wanted to. Most nights I go to sleep at 11:30-midnight and wake up around 7:30 and that seems to work fine for me. In fact I feel like I'm getting too much sleep and I miss the feeling of being tired sometimes. Maybe some of that is also to do with the fact that the main thing that drains my energy is being with people, which happens a lot less at the moment. I have never taken any sleep supplements, but the last time I had sleep problems my mum said that classical music and the smell of lavender helped me fall asleep when I was a baby, so I tried those things and they still helped So my advice is to ask your parents if they remember anything that used to help, maybe it still works now.

I believe my sleep problems come from my work at different times. Sometimes at dawn, sometimes in the morning. For the last two months I have been working on a more conventional schedule, however, I will return next month to the rotating shift schedule.

From what I've seen that is why jobs with rotating shift schedules pay quite well. Hope you are properly compensated, Jean.
Btw, does anybody have trouble sleeping in the same room with people you normally don't sleep in the same room with? I almost always wake up too early (i.e. still tired) under those circumstances, especially when staying over at someone else's place.

Yes, I never sleep well with anyone else in bed with me. I usually go back to my place rather than stay at their place. Bit awkward when you can't kick them out of yours though.

I'm pretty sure it's normal that people find it difficult to sleep in a room with other people if they aren't used to it, and even just in different places. There are people who can sleep anywhere, but I think those are the exceptions, not the rule.
