I agree with Jeh Ann, there are somethings in the world of Lemony Snicket that are better left as a mystery. I don't think Daniel Handler ever intended to create an easy to understand world for the readers. ASOUE and ATWQ are written from an absurdist plot point. Nothing makes sense, but in the end it somehow does. Examples of other absurdist fiction being books like Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. Handler uses theses books as reference and others to create his own in-literature universe.

I think the biggest difference between Lemony and Daniel Handler is not what can be found in PFB, but what is not in PFB. If Daniel Handler hadn't put on his Lemony hat, surely this book wouldn't be nearly suitable for children to read. Lemony is more sensitive to certain factors and to people. And if Daniel Handler had written it, I'm sure there wouldn't be several descriptions of how to prepare eggs but rather how to prepare alcoholic cocktails.

PfB strikes me as something written to appeal both to ASoUE's target audience, but also people who read ASoUE when it first came out. I quite enjoyed it, although I was expecting something a little more connected to ASoUE/ATWQ (the UK cover art is clearly intended to link it to them, and at least one website described it as a 'supplementary material'). That's clearly not the book's fault, though.

Been away a while but thought I'd come on and give my 2 tuppence on this book. I absoultely loved it!
I've been recently listening to books via Audible and I got so excited when I saw this was read by Patrick Warburton!
As I hadn't already picked up the hardcopy I thought I'd give it a listen. I finished it within the day (it's only a 3 hour listen) and I found myself laughing out loud the same way as I always do with Snicket's books.
Not going to go into a review of the book itself so I'll just finish by saying whether you've read the book already or not, I highly recommend listening to it. Even if audio books aren't you're thing it's a joy just to hear Patrick's Lemony at work.

Started and finished the book today! I was shocked when I read "thats not how the story goes," I also liked the vague references to his V.F.D. past. Did anyone else notice the use of the word "bear" instead of "bare" in page 74? In page 115(I think) I found it creepy he spelled "errer" like how I spelled "wourds" before for comedy purposes. I wonder if this librarian is the same one from The Hero of the Story, because they are both females, and he says they are his favorite librarian. I for some reason enjoyed Lemony Snicket going around town, visiting common places. Is it possible there is a codelike in TWW?

Kind of late in the game, but finally having a chance to read it.

So far it's pretty fascinating but I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

i saw the UK edition in waterstones. i knew the cover, but didn't know it had RED edges. it honestly looks TOO dope. like they are really overselling how dramatic it is.

Has anybody done a "Commonplace Book" entry for Poison for Breakfast? I'm thinking in the style of Foxy's Complete Commonplace book from a few years back. And if not, would there be any interest?
