i do not own a coffee table, and have never grown up with one, my grandma has one but just for coffee and the newspaper. we all value good books and of course lending to your friends.
can you post a photo of your coffee table so we can analyse your hoity-toity taste?
do you own any books for the purpose of guests flipping through?
are they an upper class middle-aged bragging tool?

I don't have a coffee table, but I have a bedside table with a stack of New Yorker issues.
That sounds like a joke, so let me clarify it's not, lol. Started a reduced-price TNY subscription a couple months ago; Plan on having it for half a year only.

I umm...set our coffee table on fire a few weeks ago. Did it have any coffee or books on it at the time?

I bought this second hand off Gumtree shortly after I'd moved into my flat last year, was around £20. The books on it are a) a library book, and b) underneath there is a baking cookbook my aunt got me that I've never opened/used lol. Also on it is a plant, candle, and incense burner. Tbh, I don't think coffee table books are that deep. I have no opinion on them being upper middle class, I don't think they're that expensive (maybe bc I am upper middle class? lol) and I don't care enough what visitors in my home think about me to spend money on a book I'm not going to read.

Are your parents aware of you burning the furniture? Anyway, my coffee table has drawers in it that I keep magazines in, and I have some books in the drawers of my nightstand.

I don't know if our coffee table even counts as one because it's tiny and normally full of random stuff because it's the first place you can put things down after coming into the flat. Mister M likes telling me off for putting stuff on there. It currently has 5 books on, but they are just normal books, some waiting to be brought back to the library, some just borrowed from the library which haven't made it further into the flat yet, and some that we are in the middle of reading and just put down in the closest place available. There is also a wide open box of chocolates, an empty envelope, an empty box of tissues, an empty soft drink bottle, a pile of leaflets of my dancing school, a receipt and our poll cards for a local election. I know this sounds too much for the table to be tiny, but it's all piled up so it works. In our defense we have both been feeling a bit ill recently so that's why we haven't tidied up.

Esmé's meme is meh I love the leaf coasters! I don't have a coffee table, but I have a bedside table with a stack of New Yorker issues. That sounds like a joke, so let me clarify it's not, lol. Started a reduced-price TNY subscription a couple months ago; Plan on having it for half a year only. I've done the exact same thing with the reduced price New Yorker subscription, but now I just have a bunch of unread copies of the new yorker lying around my flat and I feel so pretentious My tote bag hasn't even come yet
