Not really, but in books I own sometimes I'll read with a highlighter and highlight the sentences/paragraphs that most resonate.

Like you did with that copy of The Bad Beginning, eh....
People write in the margins of library books all the time, especially classical works.

I don't like the idea of it, not because I think it does anything bad to the book, but because I don't want to put that level of effort/thinking in when reading. I just want to read my book and enjoy it.

I like to find books with writing in the margins, even if the comments are stupid. but the vast majority of defaced books are just underlined/highlighted all over the place, which I find utterly pointless, even for studies.

I'd never write in a book that I'm reading for pleasure. If I'm reading for studies I might write in the margins, but I'd erase when I don't need my notes and I'd never highlight.

I once found a copy of TAA where everything was highlighted pink. Carmelita’s copy?

So let's talk about it... Yes, I've written in the margins and made notes in books. In fact, I still do this today, but only in a few study books. About fiction books, as you may have noticed, most of my fun is creating theories about history. I feel pleasure in seeing the result of my notes when I revisit a book. However, I have been a user of digital books for a long time, even before it became popular. I read books in .txt format on my old cell phone, which was not a smartphone. So I've been taking notes digitally in digital books for a long time.
This is the case of ASOUE. I would be very irritated to see tags in TBL or LSTUA, for example, because I have emotional attachments to these books. In the case of TBL, I needed to import my copy from the US. I use the book cover as an archive for some of my documents. These are books that I have an attachment to the paper, the font, the cover. And these are books that have margin markings that belong to the book's own history. On the other hand, I consider Agatha Christie's books to be a logical challenge, a game. I feel challenged by the author to try to find out who the killer is before the story comes to an end. I consider the margin markings a version of my criminal board. I can imagine connecting the facts, cross-examining witnesses and making theories through the margin markings. And besides, it's a reward for buying the physical book instead of the digital one. The book is mine, and I want to have the pleasure of wearing it out through use, especially since I won't be returning to it. Of course, that also makes the book unusable, so I won't be able to give it away later. But if I paid for the book, I think I deserve to have the full experience the way I want it and the way I enjoy it.

Bold of you to assume she wouldn't follow in Esmè's footsteps and burn her books. Esmé owned an entire library, no doubt Carmelita would keep some books she was fond of, such as ones about her.

I imagine she wouldn’t, which is presumably why you found it.

I don't write in margins but have underlined relevant passages (or rather put a symbol next to a paragraph) when doing research, always in pencil. For myself, I always just copy nice quotes into my journal document if I want to remember them for later (or I write down the page number if it's a book I own).

I write in the margins, but only with invisible ink, both to not disturb the flow of my reading and to surprise anyone with UV light who reads it in the future.
