do u use social media? tiktok, instagram, twitter, tumblr? which ones do u like to use? do u post things for ur friends or just send random stuff into the void?
i used to love tumblr, i haven't got into tiktok, i wish i could forget about twitter completely at this point, instagram seems like the only way to keep up with some people i know but i feel like it sucks what with all the censorship

i have facebook as a point of contact for the Old people in my life. i sometimes like to post quasi-photos and quasi-jokes on instagram and twitter, respectively. i don't "browse" or "interact with" any social media "feeds" as that's a life-sucking habit specially invented by the satan.

i recently joined bereal and despite my prior reservations it honestly has been the most enjoyable social media platform to me at the moment - just close friends, u post a bad photo once a day no worries, nice to check in on everyone, no ads or influencers or anything like that
i also have facebook (which i rarely use or open at this point) and i occasionally post to twitter and instagram. also very recently made the mistake of getting into tiktok (never post anything, just to watch) and it rlly is life-sucking so i might try to stop lol
phone addiction is terrifying and it needs to be taken more seriously i think

I used to use tumblr quite a bit from 2009 til about 2012, and then much less so until about 2015, and after that I basically gave it up. It was fun while it lasted and I discovered lots of cultural artifacts and tidbits via that site. I continue to update my Snicket tumblr when Snicket news arise, but those have kinda come to a standstill for about a year.
I mostly used FB for the chat function and looking up events, after I joined it grudgingly and very late in the game. Now, like most people under 40, I don't really go there anymore.
I've been using instagram since 2020, pretty much just for following artist accounts, and to have a very occasional outlet for some art. Sharing the occasional meme is about the extent with which I use the site to interact with people I know irl. I've noticed feeling slightly overwhelmed by my feed since reaching about 100 people I follow, so I check the feed much less these days. I'm guessing most people only check the stories at some point?
Generally, I prefer keeping up with friends via chat apps or, of course, in person. I will never join tiktok and I don't use any social apps on my phone.

I'm on Facebook but I never post anything, I just look at what people post that I haven't seen for at least 10 years and hardly even spoke to before that. I preferred when it was just random people posting whatever random thoughts were on their mind, nobody does that anymore.
I have a twitter account but I don't really know how to start following people or getting people to follow you.
I don't really know what Instagram even does, but people have sent me links to stuff on there and it always wants me to use the app instead of the browser, and my 70€ phone from 2017 doesn't have storage space for more apps. It also seems to be aimed at young people, which means it's all fake and posing and pretending to be perfect and I don't like that.
Tiktok is the same but even worse and much too fast paced.

lol i also still use one like that instagram seems to be aimed at young people, which means it's all fake and posing and pretending to be perfect and I don't like that. it's not aimed just at young people in my experience, and there's different crowds you can choose to socialize with. i don't follow anybody who posts pictures of their food or posts travel selfies. i guess you have to know what you want to get out of it when you join, because otherwise it really is just a - potentially toxic - distraction. instead i'm inspired by seeing what other artists I like are working on. also i use it via browser and it mostly works fine.

I have decided to make an instagram account, but I'm stuck at step one, deciding on a user name. My real name is unique enough to not be taken, but is it weird/really boring to use it?

Depends on whether or not you want real world associates to easily find your account.

i reactivated my personal instagram after 35 weeks or so of not using it and... i don't really miss it ! it's a good point of contact to make friends with other international students because asking for people's phone number is quite odd. i do have to stop myself from going on reels or the explore page, though. i only really check close friends' stories and check dms, but as someone who used to post photos (for fun) 2-5 days, it has been very odd to not use it. many people don't show their personality or aesthetic in the same way i rigorously did for so long, so it is interesting how my feelings have shifted. i did start a small "dump" account at the start of the year, which tabitha (and previously semb) followed, to try and re-inspire myself to post cute things i appreciated the way i used to. I have decided to make an instagram account, but I'm stuck at step one, deciding on a user name. My real name is unique enough to not be taken, but is it weird/really boring to use it? i saved my birth name @ as a blank account to save the username incase i ever wanted to use it !
my current user is my first name with a letter added, but my previous one was firstnamefilms and that was my "identity" and youtube username and stuff which i put on my high school jersey #lame.
i think if you want a fun / personal profile a cute nickname works best, but if you want acquaintances and the "public" then your real name works. it really depends on your motivation for what you want to use it for.

I don't really know what I want to use it for haha. I don't think I'll post much, so mostly for looking at stuff that other people post.
I think I mostly want something to scroll through when I'm bored and need something mindless to do. Currently I find myself doing that on facebook, but nobody is on there anymore so what I see is mostly stuff that ~the algorithm~ chooses, and for some reason most of it is either weight loss or parenting advice, which are just about the two things I should really be avoiding if my mental health means anything to me. I feel like on instagram there is more going on that I would actually be interested in, so I can follow people that post things and hopefully see more of that and less of the unwanted stuff.
