This is my favourite book because of the horror elements. I'd be G for Glittery, M for Misery, and W for whatever cause that's basically my catchphrase irl(ironically I hardly ever use it on here).

The book's cover art is my earliest memory of finding ASOUE. The sinister henchmen, the haunted eyes of Klaus peering over his mask while holding the large knife, the ominous title "The Hostile Hospital" -- these intriguing details prompted me to start the series proper. I really like Helquist's choice of putting us in Violet's POV with the low angle shot and dynamic placement of the three heads. The circular ceiling light further anchors the composition.
Chapter 1
Since it's early the next morning, this is our first book that picks up right where the previous one ended. No more Mr. Poe transporting the children to their next guardian.
The Last Chance General Store is a place I would love to shop at. But it doesn't sound too organized. One of my favorite details is how the floor is made up of different kinds of tiles, each stamped with a price tag.
"The Daily Punctilio wouldn't print things that aren't true. If the newspaper says somebody is a murderer, then they are a murderer and that's the end of it." Yikes, Milt.

The cover of THH was the first time that I became aware of ASOUE, but the UK edition with the big ol' heart shaped balloons. It was very odd looking, but this did not end up being the first book that I read.

My first encounter was ASOUE was getting the first three books as a gift, but when I'd finished those books and was shopping around for the next few, THH's cover art stood out to me as well. There's something particularly haunting about it.

Chapter 1 This book is actually what introduced me to the concept of a telegram. The Last Chance General Store made a cameo in the movie. It’s interesting that a location that isn’t even somewhere the Baudelaires ever lived is relatively well known. I’d also love to shop at Last Chance, at least for how much variety they have. Do they seriously still trust in Mr Poe?

Chapter 2 Shame that Milt trusted the Baudelaires enough to give them muffins only to have them be forced to betray them.Kind of foreshadows them playing Grand Theft Keys*. I love how the illustration of the bearded man with the guitar looks like a stereotypical trucker. The Volunteers Fighting Disease is the 3rd VFD red herring we’ve gotten after the Very Fancy Doilies and VFD village. *I know I’ve made that joke before but it’s a good one.

Chapter 2 Another hint about Beatrice's involvement with VFD, at the tea party where she first met Esme on "that terrible Thursday." This connects back to Esme's "steal from you the way Beatrice stole from me" quote in TEE. We'll see this thread again later in THH and subsequent books. Chapter 3 Phil would really fit in with the Volunteers Fighting Disease. The Cathedral of the Alleged Virgin appears in TUA's map. The "savage breast" quote comes from William Congreve's 1697 play 'The Mourning Bride.' It is often misquoted as savage "beast." I like Lemony's suggestion that the hospital architect went on a picnic midway through construction and never came back. Reminds me of the depressed architect who designed Prufrock Prep. (Your Grand Theft Keys joke got a chuckle out of me, Blake. First time I have seen it )

Chapter 3 Do the Volunteers Fighting Disease call everyone brother and sister or do they just do that amongst themselves? Echinacea is a reference to the supplement of the same name. It’s not a cure for anything, but it helps give relief. Imagine how awkward it would be for the hospital architect to come back to finish what he started only to find that the whole thing’s been burned down. Which reminds me, it’s later implied that the hospital has been around for years.Does that mean that someone built half a building and then up and left or that the hospital was even more incomplete when it was opened?

I thought it was said somewhere that the money ran out to finish the building, but I can no longer find a source for this. Maybe I imagined it.

Chapter 4 8 uses of the word small in 2 sentences. Kind of a missed opportunity for Babs to not be named Karen. I take it Hal’s on the shorter side since the ceiling is said to be “not tall.” Checking every single letter a file could possibly go under seems a bit tedious.

Chapter 5 I wouldn’t even know how to pronounce pietrisycamollaviadelrechiotemexity if not for the audiobook. Here’s hoping Sunny didn’t get any spit on the fruit salad. Also this is the first hint of Sunny being interested in the culinary arts.

Chapter 4
Imagine filing a document under P because it has paragraphs in it. Just...wow.
The description of the file chute being big enough to fit Sunny or maybe Klaus foreshadows the Esme showdown.
Chapter 5
In the Quagmire notes, I like to think the apartment map is of that secret floor above the penthouse which was a VFD headquarters. And the long list of dates (something happening every twelve weeks) could be a schedule of VFD meetings.
Babs being thrown off the roof of the building is a horrifying image. The same thing happened to Miss Tench the gym teacher.
This is the first time Olaf appears in a chapter in voice only.

By that logic they'd all go under P.
