Olaf,Esme, and the people with an aura of menace need the sugar bowl because there was a message in it! Yes, exactly! Apparently, according to Lemony Snicket in the second book when he was talking about regrets he said Was it really necessary? Was it really necessary to steal that sugar bowl from Esmé Squalor? So...are we talking about the same sugar bowl here or is it just a coincidence?

i think all the sugar bowls have tape recorders in them. Yes...yes possibly in TUA, in that transcript of Mr.Poe's and his sisters conversation...was there possibly a tape recorder in the sugar bowl that might have been on their table? I think the Sugar Bowl is at Hotel Denouement. (A.K.A the last safe place) It was "thrown" into the lake by a "brave" volunteer, LS states in the 10th book , so it could be @ the bottom of the lake as well, waiting for the addresse to come and retrieve their message...I dont know what to think anymore.

Was it really necessary to steal that sugar bowl from Esmé “qualor? So...are we talking about the same sugar bowl here or is it just a coincidence? Yes, perfect! That is the sugar bowl we are talking about! However, in TUAB it says in the index, See, Hiding places. Is the SB a disguise? A disguise kit? A sugar bowl? A sugar bowl disguised as a disguised disguse or disguise kit? Remember, doormen are nice

In the TSUA, on page 121, it gives a menu of the Veritable French Diner and it says that you get a sugar bowl with the breakfast and lunch specials. Are there more than one sugar bowls?

The sugar bowl mystery is something we would never guess... maybe, since it is a painted peice of china, there is a hidden message in the artwork. Lemony won't probably reveal the secret until the end. When I first read about the sugar bowl, I thought messages were placed inside the actual china. But now I'm not so sure...

The sugar bowl is likely a hiding place of sorts, because in book 10, the sugar bowl is part of the tea set, and on page 101, Snicket writes to his sister, "Your suggestion... that a tea set would be a handy place to hide anything important and small in the event of a dark day, has turned out to be correct." So, my guess is that the sugar bowl was used to hide something important and move it to the last safe place via the Stricken Stream when the VFD headquarters was burned down, though I'm not sure what it could be.

In other words: Esme thought Beatrice stole the sugar bowl, when Lemony really did, so she most likely let Olaf or worked together with Olaf in burning down the Baudelaire Mansion.
